    Like I have done dozens of times before, I connect my phone to my PC via the USB cable, but it now insists there is nothing connected. The USB connection is fine as the phone acknowledges that it is connected and begins charging. What the hell is going on here?

    That sounds like what happens when you connect a phone/psp/camera/whatever without its memory card inserted.

    Memory card is definitely inserted and connectivity setting is "memory card" rather than "data".

    could be that the phones software on your PC isn't recognising the phone. this happeded me on my Motorola

    Yeah, assuming that your phone can still see the data OK, then try reinstalling the drivers for the phone.

    have you tried powering down the phone and then turn it back on and then follow your normal usb connection procedure ?.... :confused:

    what type of phone? ....

    Remember to click View/Show Hidden Devices in Device Manager when you go to remove any leftover drivers. Since it's not registering as connected XP will 'hide' the driver.
