Help please windows search just freezes and i have to restart

as said in title i am running xp on sony vaio with avg and sygate, now i've done a complete virus scan and also ran adaware pro and reg doctor and still this problem persists I just dont know whats causing it everytime i press search in the satrt menu the computer just freezes but heres the funny thing its just the start…

in task manager performance shoots up to 100% i've had a look at running processes and tried ending them but no joy i have to restart everytime....
please help
