drive a few miles out of athlone heading towards longford. There's a place as you head up a hill where you can see right out over the lake. Might be a nice spot for shots of early morning mist on the lake (esp if air temp is lower than lake temp).

The weir below the bridge, a bit cliched but still nice.
Up at the Jolly Mariner you can go out on a sort of mini-penninsula and get shots towards the Church. Similar shots from the marina above the bridge.

Oh yeah, the mother-in-law lives in Athlone, any chance you would shoot her? :)

    Better for sunsets though really.

Depends on what you want really, but there is a nice big stone castle in the centre of town, on the banks of the Shannon. Big cathedral-esque church right across the road, and a nice double span railway bridge just a little further down the road. If you want the early morning mist shots waldo mentioned, you could also try out Burgess Park on the opposite bank of the river, beside Golden Island Shopping Centre.

By the way for future reference, the Irish Ballooning Championships are coming to Athlone later in the year, September I think. Should provide plenty of good shots.
