Good or bad call?

    How was my play here?

Sporting Emporium €1/€2 cash game I was mid position with about €350. the table had been pot raising (usually €7) with absolute muck.

Utg +1 raised to seven I reraise to €25 with 5,5 I was happy enough to take the pot down there and then and I think I had a solid image at the table ( I could be way off on this one)

SB reraises to €75 Utg +1 Calls €177 in the pot what do you do?

I called obviously or I wouldn’t be sitting here writing this. I was getting 3.5/1 and I just didn’t think I was up against a big pair.

I should point out the SB was an idiot (sorry if its anyone here but you were) he had basically doubled me up twice chasing flushes so I had no real worries about him. Utg +1 was a solid player who hadn’t been involved in too many hands.

Flop comes 5 6 2 with 2 spades UTG +1 checks I check SB all in for €90 UTG+1 immediately calls he is also all in I call obviously.

    SB 10 8 spades (why?)

    UTG +1 AA (UL)

    Me 55.

    Turn comes 6

    River K of spades

    I take the pot.

My mate in the taxi on the way home said I shouldn’t have 1) raised (maybe) 2) definitely should not have called €50 pre flop. I totally disagree with not calling the €50 pre flop any thoughts?

    1. Raising to €25 is horrible
    2. Calling the €50 is fine
    3. Hitting that monster = happy days

I dont really understand the action in this hand, it seems that UTG and UTG+1 check and the SB then goes all-in.

    You played awfullly.
Dont reraise with 55 in a full ring game. Im not surprised you would be happy to take the pot down there.

    Lucky flop

To be honest I thought UTG +1 had a big ace (which I suppose he had) and if he called I would try and take the pot down if no A or K hit the pot.

In hindsight I got very lucky and I do accept it isn’t profitable in the long run, if you replace the 5 with an 8 on the flop for example I would have lost 50/60 maybe even €100.

I accept the raise 55 was probably poor, can’t say I wouldn’t do it again though, which is probably why I am brutal at cash games and rarely play them. But I still think calling the extra €50 was ok pre flop? That’s my main beef I got berated for this particular call.

    There's no probably about it.

Small pocket pairs are nice stealth hands to limp in with cheaply in ring games(best in an unraised pot from late position). Miss a set, you dont lose anything. Hit a set you win big if there are a couple of high cards on the flop.

Building a big pot with them preflop is -EV. these are hands you want cheap flops because you'll mostly be throwing them away after the flop.

I dont think the reraise with 55 was that bad but you would want to play much better than your opposition for it to be more profitable than just calling, once reraised you need to fold, you have priced yourself out of playing for set value.

even with all the advice to the contrary, I would have often played it the same in the SE cash game if the blinds were drunks, punks or otherwise clueless. so many D4 trust fund boys come in after a night at Lillies and get some kind of social validation by bluffing away their tank, or calling raises as defending a challenge to their manliness.

    Nail.Hit.On.Head

I wouldnt regard myself as a great cash game player but fri and sat nights have always done well at th SE due to those trust fund twits. Still prefer the fitz for atmosphere though
