I have a .rar file which I password encrypted but I can'tremember it. Anybody know any programme that will find it for me for free? I've tried a few trial versions of those listed on download.com etc but they will only search up to 2/3 letter passwords.

You could check out hacking / cracking websites, though you'd be taking a risk. Also, it could take a very long time to get through a brute force attack.

    roughly: <num_chars> ^ <password_length> checks in total.

Was thinking along those lines but nowhere does it for free.

I done one before. Took an age!
Password was only like 5 characters long but it took a few days. (Was able to resume the brute force attack)

So, as you add each character to the password the combinations go up exponentially. Not worth it.
