Going to buy this server and because Dell can't provide ( won't support ) disks bigger than 250GB I'm going to fill it with 6 x 500GB HD that I can buy here

Used primarily as a backup to disk solution - configured as a RAID 0 ( no fault tolerance ) yields 3TB :)

Which for less than 3K is not bad :v: .

Is there any reason people can see for this not working .. in terms of power / bios / OS (win2K3) limitations or other ?

    any comments welcome..

Its a backup server with no fault tolerence?

backup server that will only hold archived files .. ie for quick restore without going to tape ( Tape backups will be used also and kept offsite )

the server will never be used as file server in the true sense of serving files to users - rather only as a quick restore mechanism.

And you need 3TB for this?

Just so long as you never stop taking tape backups... losing 3tb's of stuff because of one failed HD won't look to good when your boss finds out.

No need for raid0 on a backup server tbh. It'll only cause hassle and with 6 discs you'd be massively open to failure.

I'll echo existing posts... this sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

    Four main points:

    1) Disks DIE, all the time. Especially piss poor Maxtors from Komplett. DO NOT USE THEM FOR THIS PURPOSE.

    2) Please go with Raid 5... Raid 0 is ONLY for performance gains on test machines, it should NEVER be used in production environment, least alone a backup server.

    3) Servers rarely get used for their original purchase reason. This machine may well get moved to another task sometime in the future.

    4) DO NOT USE RAID 0 WITH CHEAP MAXTOR DRIVES.

Or, do not use Maxtor drives at all, they're crap. I've had many a Maxtor disk die and stopped using them quite a while back.

I've never had a problem with WD disks and have four of them in my current rig. I'm not sure how they'd fare in your server but they couldn't be worse than the Maxtors.

ok .. so I was probably going to use RAID 5 anyway.

Like I said the data is unimportant , its for quick restoration only.

anyhow anyone see any issues with cooling, power, or issues with the CERC 6SATA RAID CONTROLLER.

Do I have to buy other kits for the komplett disks ( seperate power and data cables ) ???

Whats the max size a win2K3 volume can be ?
