Zaragoza fined for racist chants (Etoo)

Even though the 9,000 euros fine (US$10,000) is significantly larger than the usual $700 imposed on Spanish clubs for such offences, Blatter believes the Spanish federation must do more to punish those involved in racist behaviour.
Eto'o has said a one-year ground closure, rather than a fine, would have been an appropriate sanction.

"Perhaps the closing of their stadium for a year, so that they have to play away (was required)," he said.

"I am not the only black in this league and I did what went through my head at the time.

"I am a football player and in this fight we must take decisions so that we do not feel uncomfortable.

9 grand is a complete joke, its their 3rd fine this season. Games behind closed doors would be a better punishment.

You almost get the impression that the Spanish FA don't think there's anything wrong with racism...

I don't think they care. €600 and now €9000 is nothing. It happens week in week out in La Liga and they turn a blind eye to it.

It's not an impression, it's a fact that the Spanish FA don't give a toss about racism in their league and IMO by their constant lenient actions with regards to racism in their league, I believe the Spanish FA are institutionally racist.

Blatter has gone insane over this and I personally hope and feel that Spain should be threatened with exclusion from the World Cup unless they get rid of their condoning racism attitude.

Wow, €9000 will break the bank.

Zaragoza should be punished by playing a few home matches behind closed doors, or they should be docked points. Something that will actually hurt them.

Absolute joke, I hope that all black players in La Liga organise a protest.

Lets face it, this isn't the first time.

We had the Spanish national coach telling Reyes to "get stuck into that black sh*t Henry", and then Madrid fans making monkey noises at all black opposition players, which is incredibly blinkered considering the number of black players playing for Real.

Absolute joke. UEFA / FIFA should be taking some meaningful action against Spain until they get serious about cutting out racism.

I read on the BBC website that Eto'o wanted Zaragoza's stadium to be closed for a year. I do believe they should have been made play the remainder of their home games behind closed doors.

It seems most FA's outside of England don't take this as seriously as they should. It's disgraceful and I agree with Eto'o's comments in 442 about closing the doors at Zaragoza and Getafe, perhaps not for a full season as that could bankrupt the clubs, but at least for a few games to make an example of them.

Then maybe the clubs will be more pro active in kicking and banning these clowns from stadiums.

Perhaps it is something this drastic that needs to be done.

It is this same argument that means the clubs will not try and turf these scumbags out.

Eto'o was clearly stunned at the scale of the racist abuse he faced, adding: "It was practically the whole stadium. Is there anything wrong with being black? They are stupid, they buy tickets to watch games in which black footballers are playing.
If that was indeed the case, Zaragoza, or any other club for that matter, are not going to refuse entry to a whole stadium full of people.

I think Eto'o should have fully carried out his thretened actions, people may believe that it means the racists win, but not so, this goes on week in week out in Spain and Italy, but only when players threaten to walk off the pitch is it highlighted to any degree (or when England are subjected to it).

IMHO, the Spanish FA is itself Racist for not imposing tougher sanctions on the clubs involved, especially such a high profile club as Real Madrid.

Luckily we are immune form it here in Ireland, however I noticed at a recent game involving Shelbourne and Linfield (a club from Belfast with a largely Unionist following ) that people turned up at Tolka Park simply to abuse the players and fans of Linfield based on their religious heritage. It is creeping in here. On a more positive note domestically, I notice some clubs, Bohemians especially, have started to target our immigrant communities with Flyers and Shop Advertisements in the language of the particular communities to try and get these people to take an interest in the eL, because God knows, the Irish people largely don't.

Well Ronnie and them have said the next time this happens the whole players will walk off the pitch. The Spanish FA have been warned if it happens at a Spanish game(like the game against England) they could be banned from the World Cup.

It needs something like that to get the problem sorted! wasnt it Wanchope(sp) attacked 2 of his own fans for making similiar noises not too long ago

While Blatter is normally an absolute joke, he seems to be taking this seriously, so I hold out hope.

Its really simple you see, if
    A. Everybody who made the chant was permenently banned from every stadium in the world.
    B. The club automatically had to play the next 5 matches away.
See how quickly it would happen again.

If Ronnie and Eto walks off, it would be giving in if it wasn't done on a large scale. Barca would just be punished. But if Barca refused to play full stop, then the SPanish FA could do nothing, cause publically they couldn't dock them pooints for it.

Very true, the only time I remember any form of racism involving an eL club was the away leg against Steaua Bucharest last year, when Joey Ndo was subjected to monkey chants, and they were later fined €19,500 and forced to play their next home game 250km away from Bucharest.

    http://www.uefa.com/uefa/Keytopics/kind=512/newsId=337924.html

The Steaua owner, while running for a political position, is quoted as saying:

"I don't hate [Jews], I have nothing against them, but if I could, I would make them get baptized"

Zaragoza should be made an example of, but its not going to happen.
