    Right-click on the layer -
    Click on "Duplicate layer" (Index Copy will be created in the layers palette) -
    You can delete the original (locked) layer...

    (Assuming you tried the lock icon above..)

    I tried that but all the selections are grey'd out :( .

    Image -> Mode -> RGB (Or other, that isn't Indexed)
    Then try the above.

    Failing that, upload the .PSD?
