Yeah, I had noticed that. It's on the to-do list, but frankly, there's just no way in hell I can possibly afford it for a long time yet.

I bought a Mex Strat from Thomann at Christmas and I'm really impressed. Placed the order on, like, the 17th of December and was there in time for Chirstmas.

Thing is, I think I messed up. I decided to go for a Fat Strat because I figured at the time I'd want a Humbucker in the bridge. Now I'm in love with that single coil tone and I wish I'd just gone for the Standard Version. I have an Epiphone Les Paul as well which I can use when I want to lay down something smooth.

I'm not really arsed to go mucking around with coil taps but I'd really like to be able to get that trebly bite when I need it. I saw this Harley Benton tele on Thomann and I'm intrigued.

    http://www.thomann.de/thoiw6_harley_benton_hbt16be_egitarre_prodinfo.html

Harley Benton is Thomann's own brand. I know it's gonna be poorly put together compared with my "decent" guitars, but it looks ok and it seems that a trebly bridge sound can't be that hard to get right. I'm just thinking about it as a siutational guitar.

I've drifted waaay off topic, but anyone got any thoughts? Anyone got any experience of Harley Benton or cheap teles? Am I mad to be thiking about buying a cheapie after splashing out on a strat?

If you want to get a single coil in bridge position, just get a scratchplate for your strat that is suited for a single coil in bridge. It's that simple.

Or easier still install a coil tap.

Nope, not really posted much, as I've sporadic internet access at the moment, but there is this thread, which will give you an idea.

Honestly, I'm not too gone on Strats at all. Yeah, the Lite Ash was nice, and I certainly wouldn't mind having one, just for the tone it would provide, a good change from all the humbucking guitars I've got. But a 'Lover'? No sir!

Ditto. Except the bit about the lite ash.

Yeah, I'm not going to hold myself to the lite ash really, it was nice, but I'm thinking that perhaps a Fender Japan strat of some sorts would be just the thing.

FWIW I've got a MIK Lite Ash Strat and a CIJ Strat ST68-85TX. So far my vote would have to go for the Lite Ash. ;)

Hmm, that's rather surprising. Well, I do love how the natural finish Lite Ash looks.

Who says I didn't, and maxed out my credit card with other things before I had a chance to buy one?

So you did visit those crazy folk at ishibashi..

Yes, a number of times. :)

There's one area of Tokyo called Ochanomizu, which is practically nothing but guitar shops. I kid you not, the main street is practically ALL guitar shops, including a number of Ishibashis, which was interesting, as one was a big shop that had 4 floors, lots of guitars, bass and drums, then next door, which was another ishibashi was a dedicated Effects shop, then the next one had all tabs and DVDs, and then further down, yet another Ishibashi that dealt solely in second hand equipment. I played many, many guitars, I can tell you that.

ZOMG, I am so going to Japan, you should have set aside like €1k for guitar gear and smuggle it back without paying customs

    Reveal

Fine. Some Pickups, DVDs, a Strap, some Strings, and one of these. Although it's a tale of woe... The latter item I had shipped home, and it has subsequently gone missing. :(

    oh jaysus....that sucks

I take it it doesnt end there, and you are sorting something out, shipping insurance or some such?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

    oh jaysus....that sucks

Yeah, that's why you don't see any thread with pictures of a very smug and bragging Karl who hasn't eaten in a while, but holding a very, very fine guitar indeed. It is infact, just a rather melancholic Karl who hasn't eaten in a while, and has nothing to show for it.
I take it it doesnt end there, and you are sorting something out, shipping insurance or some such?

Yeah, been talking to Noriko over email, who was contacting EMS to see what went wrong, and if something has gone wrong, I'm hopefull I'll not be left in the lurch.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,706 ✭✭✭Voodu Child

So, you got ishi to ship it for you? Well, apart from the fact that that means you'd be stung for duty, you should be grand. Its insured shipping, and Ishibashi are a good crowd to deal with. The fact that they shipped with EMS should helo too, surely the parcel can be tracked ...it should be plain to see where it was last, whether it left japan etc..

Anyway, im sure youre sorting it out, best of luck.

Edit - and if you saved enough for a JC by not eating for a while...jaysus, you must have been one fat b*stard... :D

Yep, I'll be stung, but I wasn't taking any chances. I've got a tracking number and all for it, but the EMS site just shows that it left Tokyo on the 31st of January, and there's no other update since, so it's sadly fallen off the radar.

Anyway, I'll not linger on the depressing details. I played many, many a guitar on my trip, so I'd be damned if I didn't tell you all about it. While playing that lovely J Custom that I bought, I also played a Music Man Petrucci 7, with piezos of course. Played a Steinberger and a Yamaha John Myung signiature Bass in another shop, and a second hand Paul Gilbert sig somewhere else. I think I played some other things, but those were the main ones.

Yeah, I'm due to get another email from Noriko on monday, telling me what the story is. It's a damn pity though, because this guitar, oh my! I say with no exaggeration, that it is about as close to perfection as my Stealth. I want it bad. :(

Best of luck with that Karl. It must be a right PIA. My sympathies.
FWIW a Canadian on the Fenderforum bought a guit from Ishibashi which did not show up at his house, eventually Ishibashi sent him another one which he did receive, so I'd be confident they will sort you out one way or another.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,433 ✭✭✭Quattroste

Jesus Karl I'm only reading this now. I hope you get it sorted real soon. It's a pretty mad looking guitar too!

I have a Tokai on the way from Japan(LS200). I was hoping it would arrive last week but alas nothing! :( There is always this week though!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

I hope I get it sorted soon too. It's certainly gnawing on me, the sheer want to play my new beauty. :(

Here's hoping you get yours too, and sharply.
