Quick question: Does anyone remember that ad for milk that was on English TV a few years ago, i.e. the early 1990s and there was a song in it that went "Cool for Cats" and it sounded a bit like Madness but it ain't Madness that did the song does anyone know what band sang it?

cheers mikey, thanks mondaytuesday, your help has proved invaluable. this thread is now obsolete, unless anyone wants to discuss what a great song it is. It's cool.

'Up the Junction' is a great song by them imho.

I must admit I never looked at the working class quite the same way again.

That is indeed a great song. Another favourite has to be Labelled with Love.

Squeeze are one of my fav bands. Difford/Tillbrook songwriting abilities are one of the best IMO.

'Tempted' or 'Labelled with love' are great songs also.

As for 'Cool for cats', the lyrics are clever '...... and I give the dog a bone'.

I always remember that Spiting Image used the tune from that song for a song called "I've Never Met a Nice South African"

Never heard that but it sounds about right.

I know that being South African is about as welcome in Ireland as a pig in a mosque (particularly if you're white) so thanks HM Pigman II, you have illustrated that beautifully.

Now where's it going to end eh? In my four years on this rock, I've learnt that if you're typically Irish, no doubt you:

    a) Hate the Brits,
    b) Hate the Westbrits,
    c) Hate Nigerians,
    d) Hate Eastern Europeans,
    e) Hate Asians and, (ta da),
    f) Hate South Africans.

Get over yourselves! Hello?!!! Just who do you think you are?

    a) Hate the Brits, ...that's allowed. after all, they did treat us like crap for hundreds of years.
    b) Hate the Westbrits,... they're Irish. we're allowed to hate our own
    c) Hate Nigerians,
...can't say i've ever met anyone who specifically hates nigerians. same goes for the last three on your list, with the exception of asians. although, that's more like small minded bigotry. someone says they hate chinese people. then they go and order a take away from their local chinese restaurant. i tend not to pay much heed to these people. i suggest you do the same.
    d) Hate Eastern Europeans,
    e) Hate Asians and, (ta da),
    f) Hate South Africans.

you seem to have a problem with Irish people. well, you know what the solution to that is, dont you?

Ha ha ha! :) Slipss, you rock.

Despite my anger above, it's people like you that make this country so much fun. Really, there is no witty humour like Irish witty humour.

Julep, I'm not going anywhere. I intend to infest your little rock and breed and invite my kin. Ha ha ha! Get over yourself you serious little muppet.

    ;)

Gotta agree with Jax, the Irish are a pack a ****.

fair enough. i just have a problem with someone from south africa calling all Irish people racists. just seems a little hypocritical.

I don't know man, this irony thing is just lost on you.

Read your statement above - now you're generalising by assuming that all South Africans are racist.

I've lived in Ireland for 4 years. I made the generalisations above based on that - I've seen it demonstrated by some people in this society. It's a shame and many of my Irish mates agree.

Now, let's get back to you. How long have you lived in South Africa? How many South Africans do you know?

Come on, this shouldn't be tit for tat, friend.

PS: You're also very outspoken in your other thread about Northern Ireland. So you must have lived in the North too? You well-travelled, open-minded diplomat you...

i didn't realise you were being sarcastic.
as i've said before, intonation doesn't convey very well in text.

the south african generalisation was a "fuck you" to you because of the Irish generalisation i believed you were making. i apologise.

Poster A: ALL "TYPICALLY" IRISH PEOPLE ARE RACIST BASTARDS

Poster B: ALL "TYPICALLY" SOUTH AFRICAN PEOPLE ARE RACIST BASTARDS

    Ironing: DELICIOUS

ha! i got my apology in before your burn. :D

    Ha ha!

All generalisations are dangerous, including this one.

Yeah and Julep, it's hard getting the whole message in text - doesn't translate well. But hell, we had fun on this thread anyway. Nice one :)

But I'm glad this has ended amiably, Julep. Some threads are just so angry :)

    Back to the music.... Do-be-do-be-do....

Can I just say for the record that the Spiting Image track was released in 1986 (The B side of the Chicken Song actually) and at this time Apartheid was still in full swing.

Sure the lyrics in the song may come across as a bit harsh, but it was in reaction to a harsh regime.

It's just one of those things that needs to be in context.

Hey! I've nothing against Brits, EastEuropeans and Asians!
Get over yourselves! Hello?!!! Just who do you think you are?

Getting lectures on racism from a white south african? How ironic.

    Woo-hoo, mate! Lucky Charms!

I thought it was 'the swing is doing 90 cos they got no place to go'

This is from the girl who thought dead or alive were singing ' You swing me right round baby, right round like a lepar baby, right round round round'

    Ha ha ha!

You're beautiful man - that's hilarious. We all do that.

My mate sings (to Neil Diamond's "I am, I said"):

"I am myself, like no-one else..."

    He's a gas! :D

Picking Mussels from the Shell is their other big song apart from Cats, Junction and Labelled.

    You can here samples here

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000007424/102-7494571-7752134?v=glance&n=5174

While I wouldn't be a huge fan, Difford and Tillbrook had bundles of talent alright.
