    Hi all,

I'm in my 2nd year of a finance and entrepreneurship degree in college. I'd like to work in financial services for the summer. However I've sent away over 20 individually tailored C.V & C.L. and dont seem to be getting many replies (none). I'm just woundering is anyone here familier with any companies that offer summer internships and what are their experiences.

    Thanks for your help
    Tricky Dicky

The Central Bank offer summer work placements:

I beleive the European Central Bank also have positions but a language is required.

What sort of area are you trying to get into exactly? Will working in a bank do ? Do you want to work in a specific area etc.

I've found from past experience that sending in unsolicited c.v's doesnt really generate too many interviews. There are also some other things to remember:
    • Most companies recieve applications through their website only
    • Many firms will only take on penultimate year students
    • Make sure your CV is up to scratch, a badly laid out CV is a big no-no.
    • Go to your college career office and find out about organised intern schemes
    • Ring companies and ask to speak to grad recruitment (this will give you an instant answer to whether they are hiring or not)
    • Do you have any contacts, dont be afraid to use them
    • Remember an internship in any industry is better than no internship

During my time in college i interned with Permanent TSB and IBM and both were through the respective companies websites. I must have sent out 50 CV's before realising it wasnt getting me anywhere (slow learner, i guess  ). Permanent TSB involved working in a bank branch which wasnt what i had set out for in an internship but it gave me experience that allowed me to get the job with IBM the following summer and that gave me the experience to secure my first grad job. Having work experience is highly valuable when it comes to finding a permanent job so good luck and dont give up trying.
