Car hire on the continent

    Hi there,

This is an information request I'm afraid. I'm going to Italy for three weeks this summer and, as I will be doing a fair bit of driving around the place, I'll be hiring a car for the duration.

My problem is with the ridiculous prices I've been quoted so far. I've trawled the major firms and the best I've come up with is about 900 euros. I don't want a Rolls Royce but do like some comfort (a/c is a must), something like a Ford Focus would be ideal.

Does anyone know where the best deals are to be found. Or do I have to bite the bullet and fork out about a grand.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've just had a look on www.autoeurope.com and based on renting in Rome for 3 weeks, you're looking at €600-ish

I found italy quite pricey for car hire. Make sure you get sat-nav, makes a huge difference.

Thanks guys, I'll try autoeurope and see what they've got. I don't know if I should go for the sat nav, wouldn't be quite the same if I didn't get involved in a blazing row over my girlfriend's map-reading and navigational skills at some juncture over the trip.

My experience is that rental companies seem to jack up the prices dramatically if you want to drop off your vehicle at a different depot from the one at which you picked it up.

I have used Argus Car Rentals http://www.argusrentals.com/ before and the prices seem quite reasonable. Try them out and let us know if it seems a good deal for the time you want to travel

Argus isn't bad either actually, but autoeurope seem slightly more reasonable. Thanks for the info though. I'll post when I book.
