If the strain of bird flu does mutate and can be passed from human to human, the cancellation of the world cup will be the least of our worries....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,134 ✭✭✭Lux23

I don't think it will happen before the world cup anyway if it does.

Very true :( And as usual I'd wager our government is totally unprepared for that eventuality, the "ah sure it'll be grand" approach prevailing once again.

    agreed

It's like they just glance over it

WORLD CUP WORLD CUP WORLD CUP .... o yeah and by the way "if the virus begins to be passed between people".... WORLD CUP WORLD CUP WORLD CUP

And what if Foot and Mouth spreads to humans and SARS comes back...

I say we all just go back to bed... its the only solution

The combination of avian flu and the world cup are just a plan by the powers that be for controlling the worlds population by removing a whole undesirable section of society in one go. ;)

    Jaysus, it's a possibility I suppose.

All those 42" TVs that have been purchased in eager anticipation will now have to be used to watch Nationwide or the like

What are the chances of it happening in recent light of this
    In your opinion?
i think it would cause murder:mad:

I think anyone stupid enough to choose the world cup over not dying form bird flu is probably a moron. We could always hsip those people out to an island somewhere and they can have their own footbal tournament, complete with bird flu!

i think it's just germany's plan to say "omg it's cancelled" and then all the brits wont go, but OMG SURPRISE IT'S ON!#@!

    genius, tbh.

Yeah they should definately cancel the world cup now. Choose a new venue, not bird fly prone - Germany, somewhere warmer. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, this should warrant a reply of all qualification matches, namely Irelands. :p

I don't care, Ireland aren't playing. They won't cancel the world cup for two reasons.

    A) The avian flu has not mutated or is not going to mutate so that people can directly pass it.

    B) The world cup makes too much money.

    What if it does though?
what if it all gets worse

what if the world ends ? : 0

It all comes down to money. If they can get away with it at all it'll go ahead.

as much as i'd love to see it happen i will be very surprised if it does. Just let the tickets have a health warning on them like on irish cigarette boxes.

Germany has confirmed several cases of the H5N1 strain of the virus in birds.

And a cat found dead on a German island tested positive for the strain, making it the first infected mammal in the European Union.
It has already mutated in the way that it has been passed on from birds to some mammals. It's not impossible that it may mutate even further to encompass humans. Spanish Flu, anyone?
The Spanish Flu Pandemic, also known as La Gripe Espagnole, or La Pesadilla, was an unusually severe and deadly strain of avian influenza, a viral infectious disease, that killed some 50 million to 100 million people worldwide over about a year in 1918 and 1919 [1]. It is thought to have been one of the most deadly pandemics so far in human history. It was caused by the H1N1 type of influenza virus, which is similar to bird flu of today, mainly H5N1 and H5N2.

We are overdue a global pandemic, unfortunately. :-/

ya, having to put up with it all weekend when i work in my folks pub is enough without having to put up with it all day every day

In addition to my previous post:

Cumulative Number of confirmed Human cases of Avian Influenza A/(H5N1) reported to the World Health Organisation since 2003

Yes, humans contracting avian flu from close contact with infected poultry is different from humans contracting it from other humans. However, it is foolish to assume that the virus will not mutate further.

They need to cop the fcuk on in fairness and realise in this day and age absolutly almost anything will happen when they say it won't
