my other half has eircom broadband and uses her laptop to talk to her brother in the states using a webcam, the problem is the picture and sound quality is poor using wireless but if she connects the laptop directly to the router with the cable the quality is way better...why is this?

Could be any number of reasons.. Such as:
    1) Interference from other routers/Wireless NICs /devices (try Netstumbler / or try switching wireless channel)
    2) Distance from router too great - poor signal (try NetStumbler - look at signal strength - move laptop closer to router)
    3) Older router (maybe 11mbs) - Trying to put too much traffic through the router - upgrade to newer 54mbs based router, with Quality of service (QOS)
    4) Quality set too high - try to reduce quality of sound, and resolution of video (although this should affect the wired network too)..
