Re-assigning keys

My girlfriend has recently picked up an iBook G4 with a french keyboard layout and, while it's certainly useful for her to have all the accents and soforth at easy reach, AZERTY keyboards have the nasty habit of requiring shift to be pressed for a full-stop. It's not major, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any way, whether via UNIX commands or a free application, to re-assign functions to the keys on your keyboard?

I've already had a bit of a google on the subject, but it hasn't turned up anything useful.
