Okay, first off let me say, its not top teir Thai Fighters (at least I dont think so). Second, San Shou training that I have seen (for the good guys) is pretty much MT training. Thirdly, this is a video of San Shou versus Mauy thai, not a question as to which is better.

    That looks good.

I would guess based on what I have seen on here of San Shou, compared to Thai...that Thai would have a stronger chance of winning.

The reason I say this is, Shan Sou from the clips I have seen on boards from time to time, has alot of kickboxing style kicks, like spinning kicks, for example.

The Thai is see in Thailand here, appears to have stronger clinching abilities that what one would see in Thai fightes in europe (though I think too europe thai fighters have better punching skills).

Paddy C was training me in thai in 2005, and a few times I was arguing with Paddy that I would be able to get hook kicks, axe kicks or spinning kicks in on a Thai fighter. Paddy insisted he would just chop the legs off anyone who tried this. We had a few friendly spars and I tried what I said I would do and each time I tired to spin or whatever, bang I got choped in the legs. i would hate if it was full blast for real kicks!

That is why I think thai would win.

since then I have retired the fancy kicks.

    Labas,

I like this it is nice. The Sou shan man he is strong. He is the strongest fighting.
I think the other man is bad when he kicks the big kicks.
The strong man is the simple man.

    Tony

    Hmm I don't think that's entirely accurate.

    LAbas Tony, welcome back.

Good stuff John. I'll try drop up to one of the classes to say hello. Can barely move at the moment, I've done something bad to my back and it's killing me all day.

Interesting link Fianna. (How did you find it?)

The video is the 75kg category fight between Liu Hailong & Lukpoei Grabangkoei at the Sep 23rd 2001 Challenge in Guangzhou. The other is the 08/08/2003 Muay Thai VS San Da Challenge in Bangkok with the Thai Sitichok and the Mongolian Baoligao. The history of these events only dates back six or so years, at first the Thais always won, but recently victories have gone to the Chinese, proving I guess that fighters make fights, and ring experience is what counts not what style you practice.
A lot of people over the years have commented to me on the similarity of the two “styles”, well a punch is a punch is a punch? I prefer to consider San Da a set of ring rules and I suspect likewise of Muay Thai. Believing that elbows and knees aren’t trained in San Shou (they have always been in San Da) is a fallacy. Likewise - that there are no throws in Muay Thai, I’ve been made aware of the “Giant Steals the Girl” Muay Thai Technique which is identical to Tai Chi Chuan’s “White Crane Flaps its Wings” i.e. a type of hip throw, and the Muay Thai Ring Banned technique “Break the Elephants Tusks” is almost identical to Tai Chi Chuan’s “Step Up and Punch Down”, both aiming to catch a kick and drop the opponent through a painful attack on the knee joint.
There’s a good competition in Holland “Battle of the South” that caters for both pro san Da and Muay Thai. A lot of the lads over there compete in both.

How are ya John, here’s a link to a gym I run in Rathmines and UCD:

I try to keep it up to date with competition info, useful links, and some clips of what myself and the lads are up to.

Sorry to go slightly off topic. I've been reading this and some of the techniques listed above in Nialls post. Meanwhile my son is playing with his v-tech alphabet toy beside me. The two started to mix themselves in my head, "The Sleepy Turtle opens his Umbrella!" The "Giant Steals the Girl"!:D

Is that not called a plough in MT?

I do think San Shou is realy great to watch, I think some of the rules need tiding up though. Like throws and sweeps and stuff CAN be ambigious. Maybe the fights should be judged like pro MMA or MT, in that the winner gets 10 and the looser gets 9 or less per round? Based on the over all fight rather than scoring by using turning kicks etc?

    Peace
