Please help me! I got a new pc for christmas. I hd to re install windows xp though. now there is no sound. windows doesn't see the on board sound. its on the motherboard. i got sound mx and tried to install it but it won't cause i don't have the 'correct hardware'. i also installed the motherboard software but it doesn't help. in the control panel, it says that there is 'no audio device'

    please help!

did you get a motherboard cd with the computer? the souncd drivers should be on that. what is the motherboard you have?

    this program should tell you:

    http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

once you get the spec of the motherboard it should be a simple matter of finding out the name of the onboard sound hardware and getting the drivers from driverguide.com

edit: also check in the bios if the onboard sound is disabled

Apart from the MB driver you should have audio drivers on that disk.

which asus? use that cpu-z program i linked you to to get the model. if you don't know what to look for, mines an asus a7v8x-mx. yours will be similar

Go to control panel /add hardware ,tick my device is already installed, click search detect all hardware, then see if it finds your audio device, clik have disk, then insert the driver cdrom, browse to the folder that has drivers/audio ,with various sys, inf files ,in it, insert the winxp cd, if you lost your utility or drivers disk.if you look round the i386 folder ,you will see a folder drivers/audio / your driver for the audio unit, will probably be there.

I'll try that thanks. The sound outputs are on the motherboard so how will it find it as a device if its built in?

windows will detect whatever device .sound units are on motherbord,,unless it is DISABLED IN THE BIOS, bios is the prog that controls the hardware setup ,of pc, before windows loads up.if you hold down del ,or maybe f1 for 10 seconds, after turning on pc ,the bios will load up , go to settings advanced, use arrow keys ,and enter key, to click on ENABLE onbord sound device/ sumything \name of sound cardunit.YOU MAY HAVE TO LOOK THRU MENU IN BIOS, look at enable/ pci inbuilt devices/intregrated devices.sumthing like that.its PROBABLY,switched in bios/enabled already .be careful ,if you change bios settings incorrectly the other devices like cdroms, wont work properly.windows will say found onbord soundcard/sumthing model/sumthing ,then click,hAVE dISK ,BROWSE TO CDROM, then browse to drivers/audio/ are located ,then clik ok.
