Electricians are rewiring my house this weekend. He is going to pre wire the cable for my satellite so that the Sky technician doesn't butcher my house.

    What i was wondering was.

How many cables do i have to get him to run from the roof so that I can get Sky+ and use another decoder to get the other UK channels at a later date?

    Cheers for any advice.

4 or more ct 100 coaxial cables out to where dish is, also at the back of main tv get 4 or 5 tv points a telephone point {cat 5} also get your surround sound cables in , master bedroom 3 or 4 tv points and telephone point
lounging room 2 or 3 tv points and telephone point and all the other rooms 1 or 2 tv points and telephone point. {Job done House wired} best of luck

get a return cable to your distribution area so you can send the sky signal around the house, better still get an inmstaller to do this rather than an electrician, bear in mind the electrician does not have to get it working so he may not be aware of what is required

    Cheers

I am a bit ignorant to all this so i thought i was a case of running 3 or 4 cables from my roof to their socket position and then a proper satellite installer can turn up further down the line and whack the dish up.

I'm tracing all the wires in my house so don't want a technician turning up in 3 months and mauling the work we have just done.

I would recommend that you run 5 lengths of coaxial from the attic to the living room.

    2 for Sky+
    1 for FTV/FTA box
    1 for terrestrial aerial
1 for sending signal back up to attic where it can be redistributed throughout the house.

One further question on the return cable.

What device does the return cable feed into to distribute the signal?

Huge thanks for the info as I am pretty much a newbie but learning fast.

4way, 6way or 8way "Sky Eye" compatible UHF TV distribution Amplifier. One brand is "Global".

It will also distribute your TV aerial and VHS

    Aerial ---> [VHS ]--->[Digibox RF2]---> [distribution amp]

The VHS can't tune to Sky box but uses AV SCART cable.

Make sure all cables are CT100 or equivalent (copper on copper) as many sparkys tend to opt for cheaper RG6 or worse, that single-screen clothesline.

As Scaller says, CAT5 cable for phone (can be later used for networking) is a good idea, as CAT5 is pretty cheap anyway.

Then, make sure you've a power socket in your attic (or whereever your distribution point will be. This can be used to power your distribution amplifier and/or PSU for masthead amp.

Sky Eye compatible amps, I like the Antiference ones (have a seperate VHF input which can be used for FM/VHF RTE if needs be). This does require mains power though. Triax make one also that can be powered from digibox, similar to the Global one, though only for 4way or less. 8way requires mains power.
