I have been tasked with purchasing a new server, some pc's and a laptop for our office and I have until the end of the month to have everything in place up and running.

Server will need to be running SBS 2003 with a backup unit and pc's/laptop with XP. What is best for backup these days (tape, disk) and what manufacturer would you recommend for them? Dell, HP anyone else worth looking at?

    Darren

    Hi DarrenG

Would recommend HP server and workstations - maybe a little bit more pricey - but worth it form a reliability and service point of view.

Backup unit still best to use a tape drive - type of drive depends on volume to be backed up

Backup software - Arcserve Small Business Server - to fit in with MS SBS.

Dont forget your anti virus solution, firewall etc.

You should look at backing up your stuff offiste also. Something like what's provided at fastsecure.net. (I don't work for them, just to mention) :D

I'll second the HP option. We have a proliant ml350 here and it's doing the job nicely. We have a DAT72 drive in ours for backup.

Was looking for fastsecure.net but there doesnt appear to be a website there, just a holding page.

Thirded. Incredibly reliable servers and Gigabit network cards as standard on desktops... don't get suckered into Dell Optiplex.

By the way, why the requirement for SBS2003? What is your server gong to be doing mostly?

Really for exchange server. MX records are currently pointed to our SBS server. Do you have an alternative to SBS?

We actually use Compaq computers and server at the moment and they have never really given us any trouble so HP does seem a good choice. I will make up my mind on this before the week is out.
