    Whats bebo?

yay i was going to start a thread on this last night!!!!

i've been on bebo for nearly a year but in name only i've only started using it in the last month. i hate those kind of sites in general. I'm on facebook, myspace and bebo and probably others which i dont remember joining. Of all of these bebo is undoubtably the most annoying. Unlike on Myspace and facebook all those annoying people who you used to know in shcool and who subsequently went to do arts in ucd are there, well maybe thats just in my expierence. Its Uumpa Luumpa fantastic. Its pink fluffy-ness bounces off the screen even when they have all american rejects or Panic! or whoever their latest psuedo emo (though emo is a hugely undesireble thing in the first place so psuedo emo is probably unnesscessary) band is is playing in their falsh box. It breeds homogenisation. Argh i really don't like it but it can use up alot of time. correction it does use up alot of time. however that being said i am not a bebo addict. I hate spam so i dont forwarded the bebo junk in an attempt to rebel against the general "lomg this is sooo scary....and totally true"-ness of bebo.

on another bebo related topic. the email which was sent around about the riots on saturday, i got that on bebo, and as such half ignored it becuase it was bebo spam, and literally the punch like was right so no shopping in town on saturday guys! I mean riots etc huge destrcution of public property and the big blow to their lifes is that they can't spend yet more money. bebo is the internet made simple for D4 heads in school and their BESS and UCD Orts girls counterparts in college.

may be a bit of a love hate relationship though..

i hate that song. i hated it in germany. i hated it out of germany.
my flash is a recording a friend of mine arranged for a japanese string quartet for an animation company. it made him quite a lot of money despite the fact he had to credit linkin park.

    i hate bebo.

no, ok, i don't really hate it.

i hate the people who clog up the computer rooms in college during the day and at busy times looking at their friends' boring photos. if that's you, then you might have already met me, i'm the angry women with blonde hair who stood behind you and said 'are you done yet? i need to get some college work done'.

i just have no time for bebo. want to keep in contact? try email. you can just sod off with your flash boxes and trawling other peoples contacts for some hot 17year old mountie to add as a friend. damn it all to hell. i can't wait for it to go the way of celebdaq in about 8 months. what's celebdaq? exactly.

i wonder how long its popularity warrents ISS adding to their lil posters no bebo...not that anyone really pays attention to anything on the posters, but they'll feel better about the situation if they posterise it

what's worse is the fact that the 4th floor of the ussher is now entirely taken up with people using their laptops to look at bebo. and talk and laugh. loudly. it is now impossible to study up there. although shushing people is fun.

You can't beat the self-righteous feeling you get when you turn around with a fiery glare and tell a load of annoying giggling idiots to shut the **** up in lectures. It's like a warm glow that surrounds you. :)

Maybe it's the repeat-student showing through, but I'm the grumpy old man of 2005/06 JF science, and I love it.

    No, i'm not a slave
I finally joined on Saturday (pretty much blackmailed into it. Bah), and it's the devil. I plan on using it to keep contact with people for as long as the craze lasts (please, god, not too long) because losing contact with old school friends that I never see because I don't like the way they want to communicate seems...well, petty. But I do agree that people who use it when the computer rooms are full are annoying as hell - it's one thing if there are free computers, but if there's a queue building up and you've got nothing more important than bebo to do, then leave.

    SO BEBO IS GREAT
Isn't it, isn't it just cool to constantly be in contact with everyone we ever knew felt or touched isn't it just so cool!

Well maybee not if you are minutes away from your pesky deadline sweat dripping down you un-gelled short back and sides, cut on top, gazing through a stream of chitty chatty typers in the Rear end of the Hamilton catching up with that guy they scored while on easter break in Turin or trying to wittily coy up the beauty of a one liner. What do you think of Mr Saviour then, mr no more need to socialise through those mundane vocal cords, Mr im too good for casual sex Mr Bebo,

Should Bebo be banned from college?

Right so, since the glorious election results of nine days ago, the thing that's been asked to me most is, "When you're Education Officer, will you ask ISS to block Bebo from college computers?" That's come from friends, flatmates, classmates and random people I've met in the pub. Is there a case for trying that? Or might it even be an idea to try block it out close to exam times?
Could be an idea to ask Donal this year if he can get it blocked between Week 4 of Trinity Term and the end of summer exams and see if chaos ensues. Just a thought. Could be an idea for an SU council motion.

Even though it's absolutely logical and fair, I'm sure there'd be outcry. Maybe just block it from the computer labs, and not all computers.

    Whats bebo?
Rob, please, please try to get Bebo banned. At least then, there won't be queues down the stairs in the GMB PC room, etc. Let people "Bebo" in their own time, on their own Internet connection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

    Whats bebo?
What would a ban involve? Can people still access the site through their laptops (using a Trinity proxy)?

Playing devil's advocate for a sec. if you ban bebo shouldn't you also ban any non-college related websites? What is the purpose of all these computers in Trinity - is it work related only (in that case ban everything that doesn't include tcd.ie in its url [exaggeration I know]) or for people to have access to the internet that they may not have at home?

Shouldn't boards.ie also be banned from college computers then? (Although the argument can be put forward that boards.ie have some relation to work in Trinity...)

    That would involve Boards!

I think Bebo just takes so long to leave messages, look at photos, write a blog, scribble on people's whiteboards, watch flash boxes, etc. It takes for ever. There was a guy in the Trinity Hall computer room on it for five hours straight one evening. It's fine to look at non-College-realted web-sites, when there's not a queue for the computers, but I find it exceptionally rude, when there's a large queue, and people are using Bebo or Boards or watching episodes of the next season of some television programme. I suupose, therefore, it's more a question of manners.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

    Whats bebo?
So perhaps we should have computer etiquette signs put up or something - indicating that if what you're looking at is not college-related then please give your position to people waiting in the queue etc. Just like on buses - standing up for old people, young people etc. and giving them your seat.

No, the computer room in Halls is run by IS Services like any other. Academic work is meant to get preference. If they want to look at Bebo, students can get their own computer and connect it to the network point in their room. Alternatively, they can restrict their Bebo usage to quiet times, like early in the morning.

Trinity (ISS) doesn't block any sites. I think that principle is worth sticking by. People who clog up the labs, on the other hand, should just be stuck to a wall. And rotten fruit hurled at them. Especially pineapples. Because they might still be sharp.

In hell, there will be special spaces reserved for people who talk on their phone in the library, who stop you getting to computers that you need to do, and people who bang your door down just to find out when they can get a Travelcard (ask EduMyth).

A new rule (and signs saying so) in all ISS computer rooms saying that those not doing college related work (IE bebo) must surrender their computer to someone wishing to do college related work, during busy periods/when there are no free computers, would do the job very well without causing too much uproar. You'd still get some twats who'd refuse to give up their computer, though.

But we're not the ambulance chasers of America... aren't we here to defend fundamental human rights and other noble causes??? *silence* Maybe not :(

Torts is sooo petty - you touch me and I'll sue you for battery (look at me and I'll sue for assault!)

Much prefer constitutional law - see above about defending human rights... :)

Should post that joke on the lawyer joke thread on the legal discussion forum on boards... http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054898050

    here's 2 more:
"I hear you lost your court case. Did your lawyer give you bad advice?"
"No. He charged me for it."

    Why won't sharks attack lawyers?
    Professional courtesy.

Oh, I hate people who hide library books. I've lost count of the number of times I've not been able to find a book that is supposedly on the shelf. I mean, I looked for one particular book for about a fortnight, before I just gave up. It's so ridiculously unfair.

I don't think the problem is bebo itself, so much as people being inconsiderate, and not recognising the fact that people need to actually get some work done from time to time. I'm sure if bebo was ever banned people will find PLENTY of other stuff to occupy their time with and prevent them, or people around them from actually getting down to real work.
As for bebo itself, I don't see the big deal, so it's populated with illiterate jocks, ditzy airheaded bimbos you went to school with for six years and you want to forget about etc.? So what, there are plenty of "normal" people on it too gg. Most of my Computer Science class is on it, and I'm sure most of us would fall under the not retarded demographic :).
