Finding decent dance....

    Hi all,
Im new to the boards, particularly fond of this Dance/ Electronic forum. You all seem like sound lads.

Well anyways im big into my music, i have alot of expensive stuff and i own alot of music. I DJ so really i have to have alot of stuff. But my big philosophy when it comes to djying is that whatever i play it has to be good. I refuse to play ****e music. I dont care what genre it is as long as its a really good tune.

Up until about a 3/4s a year ago i was more into alternative band based music than anything else. The kind of stuff mtv2 plays on 120 minutes. Good alternative guitar orientated music alot of the time. But anymore i dont get the same kick from this type of music and elecronic/ dance seems to give me more of a buzz. For a long time now ive been passionate about Aphex Twin and all of his assosiated aliases. That kind of really mental chopped up beats. Ive been big into alot of other stuff on Warp for a while now too, eg Lfo, Boards of Canada, Squarepusher, Amoin Tobin. And i find it easy enough get a hold of good chillout music.

I really want to get into proper dance, i want to have the same knowledge of it as i do for alternative guitar stuff. I can find decent new alternative music no problem but i find it very hard to source good dance/ electronica and i really want to get more because i dont want my sets to get repetitive, playing the same dance tunes.

I just need to find out how ye source these tunes?
And where ye buy/ download them?
Im talking about music with savage, detailed intricate beats, and a good hook that gives you a buzz.
Some stuff i can give you as examples
    1) Scott brown: I really like some of his stuff on the Bonkers cds like Rock The Beat, Neckbreaker, Call my Name(with DMO)
    2) Re-Con: Enjoy, Again on the bonkers cds
    3)Voyage from Magik Vol 6
    4)Elysium: I go crazy
    5)666-Paradoxx(Club Mix)

Stuff with a good hook that gets you going and i know that stuff listed above isint very "hard" but thats because i just cant find the hard stuff.

Hopefully got the drift of what im saying after all that. I hope ye can help me out, Thanks

Whats the story bud,id imagine your quite young(ish) if your into all this Bonkers Hardcore stuff,i prefer original Hardcore from 91-93 myself, when you say
I really want to get into proper dance
im not exactly sure what it is you mean?Define "proper dance" everybody is gonna tell you differently as everybody is into different genres, personally speaking i believe you cannot beat House Music from 1988-1994,also Rave/Hardcore and Trance/Techno from the early 1990's,i also like a lot of Jungle/Drum N Bass and Breakbeat,i like some early Happy Hardcore from 1994 but after that it turned into cheddar cheese.

You also mention Aphex Twin,Boards Of Canada and Squarepusher,i have lots of stuff like that in my Soulseek folder,PM me if you want to be added to my userlist.

Anyway just be yourself and like the music you want and don't worry about what others are into, dance music is to be enjoyed, the only people i think don't seem as if they actually enjoy dance music because they are so serious about it are some techno geeks who are trainspotters and their lives revolve around minimal techno:rolleyes: sad indeed,if you want any links for websites, etc let me know.;)

Yeah just doing the leavin now. But dont go on the fact that i mentioned bonkers. Im really not into them, just my younger brother has a few of them kind of cds, Bonkers, Hadrdcore Nation, Clubland, etc 99% of it is ****e, just naiming some of the stuff i think is ok from it.

Actuall when i look at it "Proper Dance" sounds like something a 2 year old would say. Anyways I just mean good electronic based music, dance with substance to it, not this Dj.Sammy kind of ****e.

Get a few essential mixes and see what you like.

    I agree with anima.
Essential mixes are a good place to start looking for daecent music.
Also I would advise looking into some drum and bass. Stuff like Dj Zinc, Dj Marky. Also my favourite label Hospital records have some quality material available.
Look for something like weapons of mass creation or Hospital Mix 1,2,3 or 4.
They are always worth a look in.
Alot of drum and bass is not so commercialised so there is alot of quality mixes and tunes out there at the moment.

In the essential selection side of things, Lee Coombes is probably a good place to start.

Well you're the same age and seem to have the exact same taste as I do, so you might try:

    Acen
Roni Size (esp. Brown Paper Bag [Vocal Mix])
    LTJ Bukem
(Early) Prodigy - esp the albums Experience and Music for the Jilted Generation
Goldie (Although it might be a bit too drum and bassy for you)
    Fourtet
    UNKLE
    DJ Shadow
Tiga (More commercial - the Mylo of 2006)
    Jacques Le Cont
    James Lavelle
2 Many DJs Compilations are always interesting

Great call on Amon Tobin btw :)

In fairness to Tiga, he's been around longer than Mylo. I still love his version of 'Its getting hot in herre'
