George Bush is a legend and deserves the credit he is owed.

It's a shame he is not leaving the plane as I would love to shake hands with one of the worlds greatest leaders ever.

    VOTE FOR BUSH

So  . Less the world see's of him the better.

There should be no problem with this. I take issue with the airport being used in the transport of prisoners or refueling of war planes, but not with the transport of a world leader.

I fully support the public's right to hold a protest close by however.

I don't see why the US continues to use Shannon when if they were to fly a mere couple of hundred miles further east they have a nice selection of their own airbases to use for this sort of thing and no one can kick up much of a stink about it as they are effectively still on US territory.

He's been to Shannon before - why would he bother to get leave the plane this time?

    Laziness, TBH.
You claim to dislike him intensely and willing to picket...but too lazy to make the trip?

I dont have a problem with him at all, but you know the type that demand that he be arrested as a war criminal etc etc will be out in force around shannon airport.

Could be worse. I vague recall Yeltsin being too plastered to get off his 'plane at Shannon, and the Irish government types and honour guard etc waiting on the tarmac to greet him.

    NTM

Why? It was either vote for him or the other guy, (or not vote or chose a 3rd party.)

    No win situation really.

    BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggggggg

In related news, a plane lands and takes off at Dublin airport. Whats the point of this? Unless he has a magic plane he has to refuell somewhere. If your going to pick random crap to be annoyed aout, your tax money pays to house and feed murdeerers and rapists (in prison, but still)

True, however not entirely, What a paradox! :D Isn't Airforce one equiped to be refueled while enroute. You know where the tanket pulls up in fornt and leaves back a hose and fills her up with Kerosene in Mid-flight. IF Bush wanted to be on time in Afghanistan and wanted to get there quickly he'd have used in-flight refueling. The Shannon-Stopover was something more I'm afraid it was a chance by him to meet and greet troops in Shannon. Our "Neutral" little country is helping in the slaughter of thousands of Iraqis and there is no point saying otherwise.

Do they not only use that if entirely nessecary? It's a bit iffey iirc and not to be used permenantly.

Wouldn't that be grossly expensive compared to landing for an hour? Its also a very dangerous trick to pull off.

Somehow I think its something a little simpler...
The reason for his stopover -
    the law wrote:
The United States - Ireland bilateral or Air Services Agreement requires that air carriers operating between the United States and Ireland must provide capacity into Dublin Airport and Shannon.

It requires a special setup not to land there - somehow I think they were just too lazy to get it, so stopped anyway.

And just as a small aside - the military refuels pay for 40% of shannons worker wages. Can anything else do that? Nope. Can you pay their wages? nope. They will not have jobs if the US military pulls out.
