My bloody computer is bloody banjaxed! When trying to boot up I get a Disk Read Error

Ran the Hard Drive Diagnostics, and got a Return Code 7

This is a Dell 8400 computer with a Maztor 6Y160MO hard disk.

Any body know of anything that might breathe life back into it for me?
Or if it's possible to retrieve data from it if (and more than likely) when I get a replacement drive.

    Code 7
The message text that is displayed for this error is specific to the driver or enumerator. If the driver does not provide information as to why it failed, the following message is displayed:

The drivers for this device need to be reinstalled. (Code 7)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

    Solution button: Reinstall Driver

This code means that no configuration can be performed on the device.

If the device works correctly, you do need not to perform any steps to correct the code. If the device does not work correctly, use Device Manager to remove the device and then run the Add New Hardware tool in Control Panel. If you continue to receive this error code and the device does not function properly, check with the hardware manufacturer for an updated driver.

I don't think that's it, that seems to assume that I can actually get into windows, which I can't.

When starting the computer I get Disk Read Error Press Ctrl Alt Delete to restart, after restarting I hit f12 to get into the boot menu, and ran the hard disk diagnostics from there.

Have you opened up the case and re-seated the drive cable , ( either SATA or IDE ) as this is the most common cause of a disk read error . This may get the system back up and running , if not , try booting from your XP ( or windows CD) and see if the xp installation routine can see the windows partition , if it can , try the option to repair the installation , this will attempt to repair the system and will not harm your data , if windows cannot see the partition and the cable connection is fine , then the hard drive is probably dead and Im afraid unless you have a backup the data is gone.

There are recovery services available but they are horrendously expensive so unless the data is a matter of life or death then its gone !!

Cheers, the connections are fine, got into the recovery console and ran chkdsk / r.

Windows xp seems to boot up, but once it's no taskbar, or icons from the desktop show, can run some things from the task manager.

Data seems to be okay, gonna try get a new hdd, install windows on it, make the original a slave and see if I can get at anything.
