I have noticed that quite a lot that my Dell has long spells of emitting a lot of noise, it sounds like it's coming from the fan. Is this normal? It can be happening for an hour then suddenly just stop or may not happen for several days. Is there a chance that something is overheating or is there nothing to worry about?

Download a program that monitors temperature and keep an eye on it.
It really depends on the "noise"... Clean the fan(s)?

Dirt, open computer, unclip fan and blow away dirt . While its out measure it, maybe its 20cm or 40cm and be ready to buy another fan from Maplins or similar

Open it up and remove the fan, take the blade out of the fan and put some oil in it and it will be grand.......

Have a check in the BIOS to see what % speed your system fan is operating at?, they aren't set to operate at 90 or 100% by default but maybe yours has changed to these speeds somehow which would explain why the system is noisy, also, whilst your in the BIOS monitor your system temperature, if it's fluctuating crazily that'd explain why the fan is constantly going into overdrive hence the noise levels..

My HP does this aswell - bloody annoying. Makes the noise if the PC is started cold (eg. if it's been off for a few hours) and makes a really loud whir for the first hour or so, until it warms up and then it stops. Seems to be coming from the graphics card fan, but HP say nothing's wrong and it's run fine for the past year and a half for me!

ITs just annoying. as far as i can remember it only started last few months. It sounds as if its varying speends or something and is not consistent

stand directly in front of the machine, nearest the rear making sure its flat on its feet. with your both feet facing it.
take your left foot back about 24 inches and then bring it forward about 27 and three quarters.
That should fix it until it happens again.
    it's what i do

What type of Dell model is? I know for a fact that there was a re-call done on a number of Demension models due to Fans Spinning at Max revs due to a problem with a sensor, and Dell replaced it with no fees
