Anyone know the movie?

I saw this movie late at night years ago after coming in from the pub and really liked it so I'd like to try and get my hands on a copy of it but I've no idea what it's called so I'm hoping someone out there can recognise it from a fairly sketchy description:

it's centred on a guitarist in what I think was LA who's landlord was an old guy who basically never charged him rent because he liked the kid's company. He was in a pretty average band that were clearly (to everyone but him) going nowhere but used to 'jam' with a stranger across the city at night by setting up his amp and playing out on the city from the balcony of the house he was living in and the other guitarist would play back at him from the depths of the city. Rather predictably he meets this guy at the end of the movie and forms a band with him....

Anyone recognise it?

Ok, I have a similar question that has been bugging me for ages.

I have a vague recollection of something I watched in recent months.

There is a girl, she's being held hostage (or captive), and there's a man (I think) who is the bad guy. She runs to the window and wants to jump out to escape, but he says something like "don't jump now, because this building is only [x] stories and you'll just fall and break your legs, and I'll have to bring you back up here again then but you'll have broken legs and I'll have to take care of you" (something along those lines)

Does that ring a bell for anyone? I know it's vague... I can't even picture the people in the scene but it's chewing at the back of my brain, taunting me.

Don't think it's Cellular (haven't seen it) and not Boxing Helena (more recent).

I think I'll have to live with the fact that I'll never find out what that was.

but on further inspection it's none of these afai can tell anyways..

I guess it's that kind of scene. I had asked my boyfriend (just in case it was a dream and I didn't actually see it). He remembers it too but can't place it. We're all cursed now. Maybe it was a TV show?
