Interesting program on BBC3 last night called The Real Hustle which looks at various scams doing the rounds at the moment. One looked at the use of Wifi to gather peoples credit card information.

The way it works is as follows: The scam artist has a laptop with some software which hosts what looks like the sign on page for the hotspot, the laptop has also has a powerful wifi card which generates a stronger signal that the local hotspot.

The scam artist sits in say the lobby of a hotel and just waits for people to come in to use the hotspot, their laptops find the signal from the scam artist laptop and they sign on to what they tihnk is the hotspot and supply their credit card details for payment. The scam artist reads the details while forwarding the http requests etc on to the hotspots network.

The scam artist can then use the details to shop online while the person whose card they are using is sitting right beside them unaware that they are being ripped off.

The adivce to avoid this was to either use a wired connection and avoid wifi or check with the owner of the hotspot before logging in the details of the network connection and make sure you connect to it.

    M.
