What do you know about a Porsche 944?

    Hey!

Well I'm looking to buy a new car at the moment. And I have my eye on a few different cars, one of which is a Porsche 944. I'm wondering if anyone here has one and can give me an idea on what they are like to maintain? (€ost wise) Does anybody know how often they need to be serviced and at what kind of cost? Any tipical know faults? What to look out for etc.

I have seen two nice ones, an '83 and an '85 both at reasonable prices. I will intend using the car as a daily driver so I'm going to give First Ireland a call about that.

Any help would be great. Cheers
    A.

Well called First Ireland and they don't insure Porsche 944's. When I asked why I was told because there was too many on the road?
Gave carolnash a call and got a quote for €1340 Fully comp regular policy (not classic one) sounds good only it came with an excess of €4000 :(

Anyone got any advice on where to go to try get a good classic policy with the car as an every day driver?

Bad as this may sound, a 4k excess on a 944 probably isn't so bad really. The biggest problem for them is that you'd be on an unlimited mileage policy, driving an old but still quite peppy sportscar with the potential to hand them a fairly stonking bill for repairs if you slip up in your RWD rust-rocket.

Do you mind me asking what sort of money you're planning on spending on the car in the first place?

I'm looking at spending around the 6 grand mark. I'll be viewing two of them on Thursday. And taking a test drive. :) Plus giving them a pretty good look over. There is another one that I've my eye on but it will depend on what the vrt is for the car (Not listed on the revenue site).

Like I said earlier this is only one of three different make of cars I'm looking at. Have yet to drive any of them so that's when I'll have a better idea of what I'm really after.

I like the 944's - a mate has an '89 in black with the long dashboard. Very nice.

Regarding insurance, 123.ie do fixed-price insurance:

    http://www.123.ie/motor/quote_xs.htm

Either €990 or €750 depending on your age - covers "practically any car" up to 3 litres. Excess is huge, but that ought not to be a problem (anyone would be crazy to claim on insurance for anything under €2000 anyway).

Hopefully "practically any car" includes the 944 :)

The engine is in the wrong end - :D;)
Be careful and make sure you get a well maintained car. Espp with regard to coolant/oil changes.
Head gaskets give trouble if the car has been neglected.
Other than that just look for usual stuff when buying second hand.

Cheers for that Franksm will be looking into 123.ie tomorrow morning. Thanks for the advice Kersh. Do you still have your 911? Did you maintain it yourself or have someone else keep it ticking for you, if you don't mind me asking?
