The Upgrading Dilemna ...

    Hey lads/lassies,

    I am facing a bit of a dilemma ...

I'm 24 and I've owned 3 bikes so far in my life -
    Suzuki AX100,
    Suzuki GN125,
    Yamaha YBR125.
I think it's about time I moved on. Living outside Navan, the daily commute is roughly 50 mile round trip. The YBR does this comfortably but I would love something with a bit more poke.

Having just bought a house, it will be ready soon and stuff needs to be bought for it. I won't have alot of money to spend. Recently, I was told of a Honda CB-1 for sale, immaculate condition and the likes. Could probably have gotten it for €1800. On the downside, the insurance is group 8 with Aon and for the 6 remaining months on my policy it would cost me an whopping extra of €1250. I have a full license and turn 25 in July. The total cost of insurance at renewal would be €1050 for the year.

I could probably get €1800 for my current bike, 05 Yamaha YBR.

What would you fine folk recommend as a next jump up bike, taking into consideration that I would like to get it for the summer and not take a massive hit on insurance for the remainder of my policy ?

For starters I'd wait until you turn 25 - your insurnace will drop!

How about a cbr 250? Absolutely fantastic bike, and a lot of them are going cheap at the moment because there are so many around the country at the moment

What about a BROSS? I'm sure you can pick one up for cheap somewhere. I tihnk they are Cat 5 or something

damn it sutty i want you to write "I LOVE BROS" 100 time on a blackboard for mispelling that legend of a bikes name, not to mention the musical masterminds of the same name :D

The BROS is a great runabout. Very nimble, great for commuting in traffic, cheap to run and fix. You only have to look at the amount of couriers on them to realise how bulletproof they are!

I have one myself and the insurance is pretty reasonable.

There are a whole host of other options now though with all the factory restricted bikes coming out. See the Duke 620 thread...

The 600cc factory restricted bikes would be quite comfortable for that kind of mileage, low insurance group and have enough poke for whatever you come across on your commute with a bit of forward planning and discretion in deciding when to and when not to over take.

My Bandit 600 is restricted, can easily manage 150km/h (fights to 170km/h) is comfortable, brilliant around town, no problems for an hour or two on the motorway (once you keep moving around on it so you don’t tense against the wind too much). Loads of places to strap things to it and the top box is great. Same brakes as the full power one =].

Group 5 insurance; I’m 23 in Dublin and only paying EUR1930 TPO.

However, given that your looking at getting something second hand you’re going to have a hard time finding a factory restricted bike. I wasn’t patient so bought a new one.

A Bandit 250 might suit your purposes also. Although I think the CBR250 would be an awful lot of fun.
