Home wireless network question

    Afternoon all,

Does any one know much about wireless networks?

I have the standard Eircom broad band at home, and we want to set it up so we can have the PC and the lap top on a wireless net work.

I'm all new to this, but from what I have read. What I need hardware wise is a wireless Adaptor for the lap top. Is this correct.

And if so what is the difference between 802.11b and 802.11g. Is it the speed. And can a 802.11g adaptor be used with the Eircom router, which is 802.11b?

Sorry of these are obvious questions, but I have to start out some where!!!

    Thanks in advance,

    Pip

I would suggest having a read over Microsofts wireless network guide.

To answer some of your questions yes you can use a G device with a B enabled router, G is faster then B and you can augment your current setup to add wireless capability via another router with a wireless access point but personally speaking I would go and get a router that has DSL/wireless functionality built in so you can do away with the Eircom router.

You can even get combo packs that throw in a WiFi adaptor for use with a computer see this unit as an example.
