Trouble accessing local Wi-Fi network.

I live close to a Wi-Fi free connection in the city centre. My flat-mate has been able to access the network from her room which is further away from the connection than my room is. I can't get the connection although when i scan with my wireless I can locate the router. But for some reason I can not actually access it. I am using a Buffalo Air-Station on a PC, and my house-mate is using a network card on a laptop.

Does anyone have any advice on what I may be doing wrong? Or is it simply not possible to connect to the WI-FI from my PC? I appreciate this description may be a bit vague, but I'm not 100% savvy on what I'm doing. The last network i used was set up for me. All help appreciated, thanks...

What's the name of this "free" network? (SSID)

Hi, is it a wireless card in the back of the PC ? maybe if your PC is on the floor near the wall it can pick up the accesspoint but the AP can't pickup your card ... to test maybe put the pc on the windowsill and see does it work then , if it does you can get external antennas with a few feet of wire for most cards

Hey, thanks for your help. I ran another scan and found a different router to the one I had been picking up and all is working fine now!
