Hrm, thats just how it us unfortunately. As far as I know, the vDSL modem we use to connect limits us to 512K which is then dependent on the amount of other users connected at the same time. Hence if you connect during the day its going to be slooooow whereas after 12 it speeds up considerably. I've found that I can only do gaming after like 1am and that my Torrent speeds pick up to their max level at around 7pm. Tbh there isnt really much we can do about this until IBB bring that doubling of the line they keep promising...

Hrm, thats never happened to me before tbh although I have heard of people have trouble with particular sites and having to refresh them repeatedly to load them. Whats your download speeds like now from something like HEAnet or Redbrick?

    Dodgy contention ratio?

Its hard to beat the broadband connection on Res to be honest, its pretty cheap as broadband goes and is always super fast. Does anyone know is all of Hampstead connected at 10Mb/s as I some of my friends in College Park have 100Mb/s connections. Not that it makes a whole lot of difference most of the time but there is times when I max it out.

Haha, this very simple formula can be used while comparing the Res connection with Shanowen and indeed other external broadband connections.

    Bit Torrent > *

    End of story. :D

Amazing - you complain about IBB (who, obviously deserve to be b*tchslapped btw), yet you actively use bittorrent - an application that has an uncanny knack of saturating every bit of your connection.
No doubt you're not the only one doing this... I had friends that were in Shanowen last year (when I was still a student) and the net connection in there was ridiculous! I said it then, and I still say it now - if you have 30 people in a building, all trying to torrent (or ftp download those Linux ISO's) on a contended line, then it's just not going to work.

Why not try a month or so of not torrenting? See if you can get others to do the same? See if your connection picks up then.

Easy there Dan...Any complaints I have regarding out connection are directed at my speeds when I'm not torrenting. Now I know other people are still doing it but I assume that with no other traffic I should get better than 30k to Redbrick?
As I said though once 2am hits I can game away to my hearts content. CS pings are usually between 40 and 80 and I was playing DoD:Source with a 38 ping during the Freeplay weekend awhile ago, go figure! :D

I was pretty cranky this morning :/ sorry :(
Still though, I say knock on the doors of everyone else and bounce their heads off the wall or something :)

Heh, I've considered it but tbh the way it is now suits the hours I'm up, I'm a night owl you see so I can game away all I want after midnight and just leave my torrents running during the day, sure they're maybe 10-15k slower but doesnt really matter if you leave'em on all day. :D
