    Hi,

Anyone got any views on the above car. I currently have a leon 110 tdi, which is a good car, but recently had a corolla 1.4 petrol for a loan while my own was being serviced.
I was mightily impressed with the way the car was put together - this was a car with 98k on it, and not a squeak or rattle anywhere!

Anyhow, I'm now considering buying the 1.4 D4D version (new), and want to know what other peolpe think of it. Its rated at 89bhp, is this low by todays standards?

I would assume reliability and resale would be strong on these cars - what do others think?

89 bhp is not bad for a 1.4 derv burner. I run a Focus 1.6 TDCI which has 110bhp, and is excellent.

I'm not too sure how heavy a modern Corolla is, and how well this unit would pull one however.

I think the 1.4 D4D is totally built for economy. Expect very little power...similar performance to a 1L Yaris I'd wager.

how do you find that TDCI on fuel? I have a 1.6 Petrol and it barely does in the low 30s. Also the bhp is 100bhp, would have thought the TDCI would have been around the same, even with the turbo.

It's quite good tbh. Even in a C-Max body c.40mpg around town, and up to 60mpg on a gentle run. It's also quiet and smooth.

And it is a full 110bhp, with strong torque and an "overboost" facility to give decent overtaking.

I know it is a totally different engine, but my 1.8 TDCI does 50mpg + and it is a 115bhp engine. That is mostly around back roads mind... :)

I test drove the 1.4 D4D, and it is a lovely car. Comparing it to a 1.0 Yaris is plain insulting. It is plenty adequate for a Corolla really, and faster I would think than the 1.6. It will probably be slower than the TDI 110 in the Leon though.

I had one of these for a couple of hours one day while my own car was being serviced and while it will not set the road on fire it was more than capable of moving. Definately not slow or anywhere near the performance of a Yaris. Obviously because it is a small capacity diesel engine it hasn't the torque advantage of a 1.8 or 1.9 diesel.

Apparently though it is claimed you can get up to 1,000km from a tank of diesel but you would probably have to drive constantly under 60 kmph to achieve this figure.

i was told the mmt auto was problematic though, with rough shifts, decided to run with a golf 1.6 auto. the fuel economy for the d4d is very very good though. with a new corrolla in a year or two around the corner, it will move the game on should be worth waiting for if u can wait.

Thanks to all who replied so far.

Anyone used a tuning box on a D4D before? - they are to be had on ebay for about €80 or thereabouts - this might make the corolla a very sweet car.

Also, have to say the Focus tdci was/maybe still is on my shopping list. Used to own a petrol 02 mondeo, which I thought was a great car. A Mondeo tdci would be lovely, but I can't reach that far. BTW, what are the mondeo tddi engines like?

A poorer and older relation of the TDCI ones. Relatively unrefined, and not that powerful.

    Tough though.

We had a Corolla 1.4 D-4D ast year, and got 57.5 combined, mixture of back roads and motorway and city driving. a lot more driveable than a 1.6 petrol, and very quiet too.

As for tuning boxes, the 90bhp is as a result of an ECU rer-map, and various turbo upgrades on the 75bhp unit, tuning boxes aren't recommended.

    howya
a few weeks ago i sold a 2005 corolla d4d..1.4 got averages of 56.5 to 58mpg per tank.. i had it for a year with no probs,,

once i even got 1000km out of the tankful but that was driving on motorway at max 60mph. great economy

good cars reliable , but dead boring, basic spec (terra).

    cheap to tax and insure..
what makes me laugh is that if you want to get cruise control on a toyota (€400 extra) you have to put in a special order , what a laugh and wait 3+ months...
toyota cars are good, if you want a decent spec its a special order and from what i experienced its a long 3 months wait, and after waiting 4 months and still no sign of new car ,, took my money else where....

thats toyota for u, they dont do special orders well. when i asked a dealer could he order a mmt one he said forget it, and that the mmt had problems, he said it would take too long to get:D

The D4D isnt available in 3dr, and only in poverty spec for the 5dr. Surely in 2006 they could make a better effort. The Corolla is especially bad though, the new Avensis is reasonably good as regards standard equipment.

pity they don't do a Luna 5 door in Diesel, as the old D-4D Strata model was a serious Golf rival

Because it is so strained already? Not a great advertisment for durability...

It will be interesting to see if they will last as long as the 2.0D Corollas.

I think VAG have done the same with some of their TDi engines over the years. Wasn't the old 110bhp unit the same basic engine as the 90bhp just with a different ECU mapping or turbo?

PSA do the same, the 1.6 HDi is now available in 90bhp or 110bhp. I would assume it is the same engine just with different ECU mappings controlling different power outputs?

Our service department services a fleet of Corolla Vans. Some of the 04 models have 60,000 miles on them, and aren't showing any signs of reliability problems.

My opinion on tuning boxes is that if Toyota thought that they could get 110bhp from the 1.4 unit without compromising durability or fuel economy, they would have done it.

I am not a fan of tuning boxes, not on cars that are in warranty anyway.
