Ghost Clone Disk Problem

I used the copy disk (clone) feature in Ghost 9 to copy my C drive to another drive. The C drive is my system disk and has windows XP installed on it. When the copy was complete I removed the original C drive and replaced it with the new cloned disk and set it as the master. The problem is windows boots, gets past the black screen with the XP logo but freezes on the next screen which is a blue screen (not the blue screen of death) with a Windows XP logo. The logon prompt should appear next but it just sits there. I tried running fixmbr from the recovery console but no change.

This is the same problem I had when restoring from a backup made with retrospect express so I assume it is not related to the backup software. Is it something to do with windows looking for the old hard drive with some kind of hardware id or something????

    Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

helter....i've done exactly what you're trying to do before, differant disk, all other hardware the same and never had a problem.....

i'm assuming your second disk is physically allright.....will she boot in safe mode??

Second disk is fine. Won't boot in safe mode, same problem. Hardware is all exactly the same.

annoying one all right.....maybe mount it as a slave drive...boot into windoze on your good installation....run chkdsk....delete all temporary files etc....maybe a defrag....

might be just quicker to backup original drive including system state using nt backup....build a fresh xp installation on the second disk and restore the backup??

Yeah it's looking that way alright. Found a few suggestions including using format /mbr from the win98 bootdisk. Apparently it clears the drive id which fixmbr doesn't do.

Just to let you know, the fdisk /mbr command from the windows 98 boot disk done the trick (fixmbr on XP recovery console doesn't fix it). Apparently another solution is to make the destination disk all unpartitioned space before you begin cloning. Haven't tried that one out though.
