DVD RW Broken

    NEC Dvd rw ND-3530A

This is a drive that came with a dell 9100.
I had the same model with a self-build pc before and never any problems.

This drive has worked flawlessly for me since I got the pc.
Got a new batch of blanks there the other day and went to write.
It no longer reads anything or writes anything. This is with all cd/dvd types. It can no longer read or write anything.

When you insert a dvd it attempts to read (the little light flickers etcc.) and even when you open/close the tray with nothing in it, it does the same...

I'm guessing this is a physical problem, and I would not put it past someone with access to this pc to have fukked it up.

I've uninstalled it from Device Manager (win xp) and it auto-reinstalls on boot-up. The device is working properly as is said.

    Any possible remedies? Ideas?

your lens is probably borked, but no harm in trying a lens cleaner disc if you can get one.

Well looks like it was borked as expected...
    Emailed Dell support,
They got me to run a diagnostics on boot,

Read Test & Seek Test could not be completed as couldn't read/find the cd in the drive (tried a few).
Build In Self Test replied with MSG: Optical Drive BIST - Spindle Test Failed

And so today they sent me a reply with
Your DVD/RW drive needs to be replaced. Can you please confirm an address where you would like this to be delivered to.

    Not bad support really...
