not sure if right forum but its a computer prob so i guess here is right..

    i have a c.d
    age of empires 2.

i have it installed on 1 computer.
    and it works fine.

but i want to install it on my other computer.
but the c.d is kinda badly scratched. ( lots of small scratches )

it installed fine on 1 computer, and it reads the disk fine.

but when i try to install it on this computer, it wont let me.
gets about half way and says cannot read drive g:

so, ive copied the game from the computer that works fine, onto a usb mem stick, and copied it over.
only thing is it wont read that the game is installed, as it wasnt...

anyway around this? as i need to install updates, and i also want to play it on the net and it needs to be in the registry properly.

    thanks!

try this, start - run - regedit

    browse through hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft and hkey_current_user\software\microsoft

and look for keys called age of empires (im not sure what the exact names will be cos im not familiar with the game)

right click on the keys and export it to a .reg file

copy the file(s) onto the other computer and double click on them

that will copy the reg entries from comp1 to comp2

back up your reg first incase you f*ck it up

You can't just copy the files of a program off a computer and expect it to work 100% of the time. Copy the files off the CD onto the computer, and install from there?

And he is right about that sig. Your second post is especially annoying, with your sig being 8 times longer than the actual body.

    http://www.infopackets.com/channels/en/windows/gazette/2005/20050603_remove_scratches_from_cd_or_dvd_compact_disc_part_2.htm

[note some people say these methods are bad for the cd in the long term.. you could probably make a decent copy in the mean time though]

and yes your sig is too big..

On the PC that reads the disc fine , insert the disc , fire up your cd burning software , if its nero , go to select recorder , choose image recorder , then go to copy disc , you will be prompted for a name for the image , give it a name , and make sure you save as an iso image and not neros nrg image type.

Copy the image on to the usb drive , copy it over on to the other PC , download ISO buster , use ISO buster to mount the image as a virtual drive , and install from there , the disc should not be needed , it will still ask for your key , but that you have ? Right ?

Easiest way to do it , as far as I know ,

I'm not sure if you can go into a registry and apply all the settings as per your request , I'd imagine if you could it wouldn't be easy , the way above is easy , go for that !!

ok, cool. not gonna try the first sugestion as im not playing with reg keys.

as for my sig, fine, ill change it.

and andy1249, thanks. im gonna try that.
might aswell make a backup of the c.d while im at it.

and yes, its the original copy of the disk so i have the product key with it.

    thanks for the help :-)

Just do the registry thing, it would be much easier and quicker than copying a badly scratched CD.

Your going to run into a problem in that the game has a copy protection system [safedisc] and if it checks for the CD when starting the game is not going to run without the disc present unless that is you use a no-cd crack [if there is no CD check then you're in the clear].

The copy protection is so old it should be easily bypassed use something like Daemon Tools or Alcohol to create an image and then mount that in the virtual drive which will allow you to play the game in the computer with the bad CD reader.

Another way would be to share the CD drive in the PC if the computers are networked then just map the shared drive to the other PC and install the game using the good drive.

solved it an easier way :-P
i borrowed my m8's game disk and copied that.
    threw my old 1 away.

and before someone tells me thats illegal etc, i contacted microsoft and asked them what to do...
they suggested buy a new copy, or copy a friends c.d...
