November 27th last i was attacked in Rialto.

I walked a friend out at 3am to get a taxi, the night after my brothers wedding, walked back from windsor motors toward my brothers house when i came across a man with a young alsation in front of me. I was smoking and he asked me for a light so i gave him a light. The dog, a female alsation about 18 months (i have friends who breed alsations) was very jumpy and a bit snappy when i tried to pet her head.

I walked on ahead and a good pace (am 6 4) so not running but walking well. He caught up, pushed me in a driveway entrance and proceeded to throw punches, only one or two connected (thank god i was not well oiled) he threw a wild right arm hook which i ducked, giving me the opportunity to run. He then called his dog and ordered it after me. Ran towards my brothers house, 20 or so yards away but the dog caught me by my left calf and dug in until i fell to the ground.

thank god i dont keep money in my wallet, only worthless cards but it was quite a shock. my left calf is now very scarred and has plenty of ripped bite marks.

is there any other way icould have dealt with this situation???

Not really I'd guess. Until attacked by dog or owner you were assuming a bad beat?
When the dog attacked I personally would have killed that dog and gone for a chat with its owner! Don't ask how I'd kill an attack dog, just be assured I can.

After that use the courts to gain restitution and stay away from owners of Bad Dogs.

have been to the gardai in kilmainham, they know the guy well but have problems getting cases/crimes against him. have talked to a ban garda who was bitten on the neck by one of this guys dogs, was brought to court, initial ruling was for the dog to be destroyed, upon appeal the order to destroy was overturned as was a family pet and would have caulsed distress to the children involved. he live just up the road from me in inchicore and have come across him and his dog on quite a few occasions (sat evening leaving spar after getting the papers). have been told by my local shinners (o'snodaigh) they can help me out but it sooner take a hit out!! lol

    E.

ps i would hate for the dog to be put down, its the trainers that teach the responses, a dog will defend if its master or pack leader is attacked.

I think the dog is screwed either way, which is a shame because Alsatians make good gurad dogs because they're big and obedient, not because they're viscious.

I don't think there's much you could have done, save not walk through Rialto alone late at night. It's a shame, but that's sometimes the only way to avoid incidents, but still you were trying to get a taxi so WTF could you have done? You tried to run..

Do you want to know how you could have avoided the situation altogether....

Never stop on the street to give someone a light. This is a classic way of setting someone up.

Geoff Thompson , a top self defence instructor, when he wrote his first book, as part of research went to a prison, and interview convicted muggers and asaulters, and they said asking for a light, the time, or directions is the preferred way of distracting someone before they attacked them.

At night I never stop for anyone, and I even cross the road if I am alone and for example I see 2 guys walking towards me on the same side. its the best way to avoid trouble!

Day time keep your "Fence" up and never set anyone within arms lenght if they look suspicious.

there is amble studies done by psychologists on attackers and murders (the Boston Strangler) is a famous example, on how they used similar methods of distracting their victims, before they committed a crime.

I hope you're not getting too many punches to the head out there, Gerry with the triple post:D

Uniflu, gotta agree totally with what Gerry posted, even though he only needed to say it once;) As regards the dog, I would suggest always carry an improvised (legal) weapon, such as a torchlight, small enough to fit in pocket but can be deployed easily and quickly as a destraction and/or impact weapon to good effect. Surefire make a really nice one but its a little pricey.

Funny but most people never think to work on there dog defence! :D

In all seriousness though you did the right thing and tried to simply remove yourself from the situation which is what your first priority should be.

As for the dog itself, you just don't really expect someone to set a dog on you, and for the people who think a dog, especially one as strong as an alsation is a field day to deal with then think again!! Its not really helping the guy.

So yes, you seem to have done all you can, if you now feel any doubts about your ability to keep yourself safe then don't, in thousands of situations what you did would have been more than ample to keep you safe. That said, if you feel like taking up a martial art to improve your confidence even if it is just in walking down the street in Rialto(!) then check out what is in your area.

The best advice i can give you is don't let it get to you dude, sometimes we all end up on the wrong end of those situations and regardless what some people here would say there are situations that nobody can deal with. You just met yours.

    Take it easy man.

the PaddyFrang after mastering about 10 words of this, finds out in the NE they speak Lao number one. thailand is a web of confusions!!!

I think its from getting slam dunked on the ring about 1o times a day is making me post 3 times.

For UNIFLU invest in anything my geoffthompson.com or urbancombatives.com and you will get instruction on how to avoid the pre attack "interview"

You should have put a triangle on the dog.

It's very hard to triangle a dog - they don't have stickey-uppey shoulders.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 620 ✭✭✭MaxBax

    rnc?

coulding you triangle the doggoe from the mount position. like sit on it's back, wrap ur calf under it's throat. something like that?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,081 ✭✭✭Musashi

You want to triangle choke an Alsation? I'd prefer something in a 12 gauge myself but that's just a personal preference.

For "Impact" capable flashlights that don't cost the earth, have a look for Inova, Nuwai, Nightcutter, Peli or even the Maglite range. For a Mini Mag with an aftermarket LED unit and it'll make batteries last about six times as long as well as having a way brighter and better focused bluey white light, depending on the LED assembly bin type.

Pepper spray is illegal here so no good to you, as are Kubotans, Coshs, Blackjacks, Flat Saps, Slungshot and other impact type yokies.

I have two dogs and one's quite easy to guillotine, the other's a tricksy bitch and she spazzes out easily. The rnc is different, you con't really get hooks in cos of the shape of their hips, and Ollie has a cool escape where he licks you right in the eye causing you to retch.:)

I heartily recommend dog wrestling as a stress relieving outlet by the way. There's much to recommend it. Also, for increasing your reaction and reflexes, give your dog your favourite piece of clothing in an enclosed area and try to get it back. Your footwork will improve 100%.

Dont stop to offer people a light but if you must it helps to pretend to be slightly mad,say something innapropriate or give a crazy cackle to mask you r fear. Most bullies and halfwits dont know how to deal with mad people it frightens the hell out of them!

Get yourself a Lion!!!!, walk it and then see how many Vermon approach looking for lights.

    Uniflu,
You know where you were attacked, next time bring a blunt club and crack down on the dog’s snout, this has worked for me before, the mugger can't really do anything (legally), and he’s the one using the lethal weapon (dog). From where I've grown up if you don't retaliate you become a perpetual victim, this may upset some middle-class sensibilities but hey? Don't bring a blade, you don't want to escalate this to "I'm calling up and stabbing him!” just make your point, hit me and there's repercussions, muggers / bullies will always go for the easiest target. (This might not be P.C. but since when is a mugging?)

You could have used some 'Doggy Style' MA on the dog!:D
Unfortunately dogs will tend to chase something running away, if you didn't run it was either headcase or dog or both to deal with. Dog would also have defended the 'master' too!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 251 ✭✭UNIFLU

    Navantkd

yeah i ran when i got a chance and the dog was ordered after me

    Niall

was just a scumbag and he does this all the time, the gardai were attacked by one of his dogs, brought him to court and the dog was not destroyed as it was a family pet and it would cause too much emotional distress to the kids.
