My New Scirocco Mk I

I have acquired a rare Mk I Scirocco on Ebay.

Always wanted one of these and I thought I would never get one. I never liked the Mk II Scirocco.

This one is in need of some TLC to get it back in tip top form and I know it will give me great pleasure doing just that.
This one has amazingly low mileage ~ I know that may not be accurate but its not such an important factor anyway.
The main thing is that the car is the 'Storm' version and is totally original bar that horrible rear thing on the back - which its seems are highly sought after.
Might sell it on Ebay - its only fixed on with clips so its not a big job to remove.
I think I will get rid of that brown colour and paint it a nice light metallic gold.

That was a classic auction though - I waited until the last two or three minutes then launched my attack.:o
I was being outbid by imigmce all the way but I guess I am quicker with the old index finger. :v:

I am sure this car would have made a lot more if the seller had posted it in the correct section. He posted it under car parts. Hence it would not show up if anyone searched classic cars under volkswagen.

    Ah happy days. :)

1800 views! Clearly a lot of interest, I love the cheesey rear window slats. I wish I had the balls/energy to get involved with buying cars online.

Thanks - going over for it on Tuesday - will trailer it back just to be on the safe side. Hopefully it will not be too bad rust wise.

Neat and honest looking car. Probably a fairly simple car and probably shares a lot of bits with the Golf. Judging by the way the seller has described it and his feedback, he seems pretty decent too. I think the brown colour looks OK :) If it is original paint and it were my car I would leave it and just repair/spray the rusty bits.

This report seems to say the MK I was a much better driver's car. I never really liked the Mk II and I can still recall how disappointed I was when the Mk II was launched in 1981 - it just did not look very good.

My main worry with a Mk I is that parts availability is much more of a problem than with a Mk II. Still I am looking forward to this car and have decided to keep it the same colour in any respray.

When you think about it this car will be a fully fledged classic in just 4 years time - unlike the 12 years I had to wait for my TR6 to acquire such status.;)

I had a MkII storm in blue, I have to say that to this very day it had THE most comfortable seats that I have ever sat in, I drove it from Derry to Kerry in a night and felt totally comfortable the whole way.
Leather seats are the business, especially the leather Recaros which I suspect that the Mk1 and 2 both had.

Well back safely at home base at last with MY ROCCO. As predicted the weather tried its best to thwart the homecoming of my latest acquisition throwing hail and snow showers at me but it failed miserably to prevent the onward advance of my very own STORM to its final destination. :v:

No more incidents than usual this time. At one stage on the M4 the nail used to secure one of the ramps jumped out of its slot sending the ramp crashing onto the M4 tarmac.

I of course was totally oblivious to the mayhem behind me listening to a classic CD of Rod Stewart at max volume until I eventually began to wonder where all the sparks were coming from in my rear view mirror and realising that the people in the cars passing me out and pointing at the back were not in fact complimenting me on my latest Guigiaro designed masterpiece but trying to alert me to the said ramp scraping chunks out of one of her majesty’s finest motorways. :o

Not having any other nails in the van I solved the problem in true McGiver fashion by tying it with the new ratchet strap I had with me.

Now its straight down to the customs with it for the VRT examination as I know I will have it looking a million dollars in a week if I don’t and that’s not such a good idea before bringing it to those boys. :p

    Scirroco arrived home safely.

My new ratchet things worked a treat.

Rocco waits for the VRT examination before being unloaded.

She looks good (from a distance)
    s4.jpg

    Yep – it’s a STORM alright.
    s5.jpg

Isn’t that the coolest front on any car (bar an Alfa)
    s6.jpg

My Caddy and its Sat Nav performed brilliantly as usual.

    FIRST DRIVE IMPRESSIONS:

Now that the car has been ‘declared’ to customs and everything is above board and legal I decided to go for a bit of a spin in my new vehicle. No word on the VRT btw – the car is not on their ‘list’ and so its another one of those emergency board meetings at dawn jobbies at VRT head office in Rosslare.

It may surprise you to learn that my first drive in this car was only when I unloaded it off the transporter just an hour ago. But I suppose as it’s a project car I expect a few faults here and there and so once I saw it was able to drive onto the transporter it was good enough for me at that stage.

Before taking it for a drive I first removed that plastic abomination on the back window which immediately improved the looks of the car by 50% and then took it for a 15 mile jaunt mixing town and country driving.

I have to say I am cautiously impressed. It starts on the button with a deep throaty growl – although I am not sure whether this is down to its engine prowess or a hole in the exhaust.
It idles smoothly and there is not a trace of sputter or hesitance and it accelerates with enjoyable gusto for a car which the last owner only drove around his estate to keep it in tune.
The five speed gearbox works smoothly and provides excellent ratio’s for maximum driving enjoyment. Most of the electric’s work and the brakes while soft stop the car evenly without squeal or juddering.
For a car without power steering it feels just right and is in no way too heavy at low speeds and also gives nice feedback as you would expect from a car designed for maximum driving enjoyment. :D

The matching brown and tan leather trim combined with the extra light provided by the glass sunroof, gives the interior a definite exotic feel. Although the leather door cards and dash are spoiled greatly by the previous owners frenetic wish to have everything screwed down – leaving many unsightly holes in otherwise perfect trim.

The main worry from my drive is that the temperature gauge rose rather too quickly for my liking considering the cold conditions which currently prevail. It remained at the midpoint between medium and max during the drive but when you stopped I noticed it started to nudge ever so slowly to the red. I did not stay stopped long enough for this to happen – so the cause of this is down as job no 1 on my new scirocco.:o
    Any suggestions welcome.

Nice 1 ASC. Fabulous looking car.

I'd say your rad probably needs a reverse flush and new coolant. You can do this yourself if you remove the rad and run the garden hose through it (or a pressure washer if you have one). You might need to fashion a crude "adapter" for the big pipe on the rad to the small garden hose. It would be worthwhile flushing out the block by the same method, but don't use too much pressure here.

Alternatively, you can have the rad "rodded" or better yet recored. There's a number of radiator guys in dublin, and the yellow pages reveal Kingdom Rads in Tralee (066)7127166.

Fresh coolant is always a good idea, and indeed fresh fluids for everything. I'd get the brakes checked out too - replace the high pressure lines and check for any corrosion in the mechanism. Brake fluid absorbs moisture, so when it's been sitting it'll rust whatever metal it's in contact with.

Sounds like blocked up waterways. Sounds like a good buy too.
