Can't Install Programs - Nearly All Exit With Errors

I've just set up a new machine as of today. It's an Athlon 64 X2 running on an ABit K98 SLI motherboard. There's a 1GB of RAM.

Installed Windows without a bother and the various drivers. However, when I come to download and run a program off the Web, I get various "data errors" depending on the application installed. Thus I couldn't install "Firefox" without a 7-Zip error, I couldn't install MSN Messenger without getting an "Extracting file failed" error. The downloads can't be corrupted as I got them from the official sites in all cases (and the only applicatin I did get to work from a download was Opera).

The OS is XP Pro with SP1. Is there any possible reason this is happening? Needless to say, a PC that won't let me install properly is pretty pointless.

Download and verify (md5) sum, tbh. it could be the connection...

    Can you install from CD?
Please post the exact errors of one or two (Screenshots)

Sounds very like the NAM [Network Access manager] corruption problem with NVIDIA chipsets, when you download data over the built in ethernet link that makes use of the NAM/active armour [firewall] it corrupts the data.

There are some workaround and fixes I believe one workaround is to disable checksum offloading in the network cards driver properties.

As for the fixes well I didn't really follow this issue as I never used the NAM [and if you're not then I'm stumped as to what this could be] but make sure you have the following things & you should be okay after that.
    latest bios
    SP2 installed
    nForce 6.70 drivers

Well I dunno if that fixed the problem, but it certainly seemed to help. I've managed to install FireFox, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Java 1.4.2JRE, Azureus, and a couple of other things since with none of the corruption problems that I was getting before. Fingers crossed that it works!
