    zone alarm,
    mcafee,
    kerio,
    sygate,

    as for anti virus,
avg7 free edition works fine on my m8's 98 comp.
from what i remember, there was an issue with a past version of avg free with win 98 about the avgcc.exe, but it was fixable by disabling it in msconfig, and turning the control panel on via start>programs.

are you sure you computer is not infected already? Seems strange that it wont boot into normal mode with AVG 7. Its fine for 98 though.

Heres an older lightweight version of kerio, for use with W98:

That doesn't sound right. How does it stop you entering normal mode?

maybe it messed with the registry?

can you boot into safe mode?
or do you need to wipe avg off the computer to get back to normal? or can you disable it in msconfig?

i'd go with zonealarm http://tinyurl.com/38ptm and avg free http://tinyurl.com/67dco. i used both on win 98 a few years ago and they worked fine for me.

I can boot it in safe mode and yes i have to uninstall for the computer to run normally.
Its actually someones computer i am having a look at for but i think you may be on to something. avg normally does a scan on bootup which causes the computer to eventually go to an almost blank screen and no further then that.

What happens when turn the bootup scan off?

Then the problems not the bootscan. Could be a conflict with something else. Norton wasn't on this machine was it?

You could be right as indeed the computer did have Norton but on bootscan i solved the problem by doing a custom install and not installing bootscan. i realise its a risk not to have bootscan but at the time it was the only way i could get it to run smoothly.

another question? in all readers honest opinions is it better to have kerio set at 'deny unknown' or 'permit unknown' ???

Ah good old Norton. If I had a cent for every machine with Norton that goes belly up I'd be rich. If it were me I'd wipe the machine and reinstall everything. I won't touch a machine that has had Norton on it. Too much grief.

I use AVG Free and Zone Alarm, Ad-Aware SE, Spybot, X-Block, SpywareBlaster. Or I use the same apps with just AVG 7 + AVG firewall. I never have a problem on a clean machine.
