So, what will you be doing for the practicals?
I'm doing two group singing, and two solo. We're working on a bunch of songs for the group, and I'm thinking of doing 'An Mhaighdean Mhara' by myself. I can't decide what else to do though, maybe 'Labhair an Teanga Gaeilge Liom'. Suggestions are appreciated! I have a pretty high voice.

I just know someone in my class will sing 'Hopelessly Devoted To You'. Badly. The mortifying shame of it all.

Labhair and Teanga Gaeilge Liom? That means I speak Irish, no? There's a song called I speak Irish?!

How confident are you with your voice? There's loadsa songs out there...

I'm doing "Hallelujah" ( Jeff Buckley) and "Don't Speak" ( No doubt), and a polka and "Scherzino" on reorder. I love the Rose, its my song for every talent show type thing....

I heard there was a secret chord... la la la. Nice song.

Yep thats it. The girl whos playing it on guitar with me never brings in her guitar to practice though, so I dunno...I may be better doing the guitar myself and letting her mime along ( nearly got it off by heart!)

Folks, just as a word of comfort - they're honestly not worth being all that worried about, and I hope that none of you guys are getting unduly stressed about it. They don't expect an amazing standard and frankly you get a better result playing something simple well, rather than taking on something really challenging and doing an OK job. And while I can't remember if you guys still have to declare what you're performing, it's really not an issue to change it at a few seconds notice.

Long story short, take deep breaths, don't try to be too flashy and you'll do great! :)

We've decided on 'Ndi Jesu Chete' (five part) and 'I'll Fly Away' (three part) for the group songs. So far they sound great. Our music teacher is brilliant though.

singingstranger - My sister told me the same thing. Great minds think alike? ;)

One of the girls wants to do a song from Les Miserables - can't remember which one - she's a good singer, but I don't see the point in stressing yourself out trying to perfect a difficult song and then not do as well. Silly billes...

I did vocals for my JC last year, 4 solo songs mixture of Frank Sinatra and other things. The examiners that came to my school were really nice and they will be interested in what you can do, theres no need to worry that much :)

What Sinatra did you do??? My teacher got me to practice all my pieces at lunchtime, since I had no exam in the afternoon...yeesh I never want to hear about sticato on recorder again!!!!! I had to sing the duets with no accompaniment on myh own since the other girl legged it home...

    I think I'm doing

    On piano:
Prelude no1 (accompaniment to Ave Maria) by Bach
    Cha-Cha by Siegfried Merath

    Singing:
I still havent made a *final* decision, which has meant so practising >.< but I'm thinking "wishing you were somehow here again" from Phantom of the Opera and "Arms of the angel" by Sarah mcLachlan or maybe Panis Angelicus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,016 ✭✭✭lilmissprincess

Panis Angelus????? Thats in the book yeah? Urgh...
Me and the guitar girl changed our songs so many times the teacher threatened to murder us with a recorder....

Do you mean "Panus Angelicus" - my niece (then 7) once did that at a talent competition in the Canaries. It went completely over everyone's heads.

I'm doing 4 pieces on the piano.

No.6 from Six Little Preludes by Bach
Sonatina in F major by Beethoven
    A Puzzle by Kargonov
By A River by Michael Holohan

The first 3 were grade pieces for the academy so I'd say a lot of people know them.

Has everyone got their dates for the practical?

Mine is the 4th of April. Can't wait 'til it's over! I prolly wont have nerves on the day because I'm used to performing on piano but it will be such a load off!

Mines on Monday. Argh argh argh.
    Argh.

I'm doing Heart Of Glass and All I Want Is You solo, and Ndi Jesu and I'll Fly Away group. I'm in seconds so I have to sing with five different groups and then switch to firsts for one round of Ndi Jesu. Bit blahhy but I'll survive.

I'm screwed. I've somehow ended up doing five accompaniment, and am still deciding on my two solo.
    Oh joy.

I don't know when my practical is but I STILL don't have songs practised >.<

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,016 ✭✭✭lilmissprincess

Ours is Thursday...eek....I seriously hop I don't catch the virusy crap going around, I won't be able to sing and I will fail...one girl is playing recorder for all four, but she has to get a med. cert cos she dislocated her two fingers...hehe...otherwise she'd have to play Mary had a little lamb or something equally as unchallenging..

Mine was today and I forgot my words for both of the solo songs. Argh! But I didn't stop, I just kinda filled in the blank spots with lines from other verses. It was grand overall though. The examiner was a dote though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,016 ✭✭✭lilmissprincess

Mine was today!!!!!!! I screwed up with recorder a litle bit, but the songs went really really well!! Yer woman was nearly clapping...
Some of the girls cried cos they were so nervous, which didn't help my nerves either..I drank so much water in twenty minutes its not funny..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,440 ✭✭✭✭Piste

No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no my practical's on the 7th April (that's tomorrow week) my piano pieces still aren't perfect enough. My friend ever so kindly offered to Accompany me on piano for Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again although we'll only have a day or two of practice together, Panis Angelicus should be ok a capella but I can't get my A if I screw up my practical

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,016 ✭✭✭lilmissprincess

Aw....hope all goes well...good luck to everyone, and remember, it is only 25%, I know thats a lot, but its not like its the entire result. This will not fail you..be calm and whatevber you do don't cry!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,440 ✭✭✭✭Piste

but you need the 25% for an A

Yes that post needed to be in Bold.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

Ah in fairness it's probably rather difficult to get 0% in the practical...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,016 ✭✭✭lilmissprincess

Yes I know you need the 25% for an A. But unless you get the meanest one in Ireland, you'll basically get most of the 25%.

    i did mine awhiiiile ago
i did two solo singing and two choir....my solo pieces were i dreamed a dream (from les miserables) and oh holy night
i hate the way they dont tell you your results because if you were planning to carry on to lc you can choose whether you want your practicals to be 25% or 5o%...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 936 ✭✭✭N90user

Did 2 TW and two Bodhran! Yippee went well for a nights practice!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 392 ✭✭Twinkle-star15

I did mine ages ago, but that doesn't diminish the fact that I sucked. I did 2 on piano, and 2 singing. My piano was only grade one, so I was like, eek! And I f*cked up my singing because I was so nervous (and tbh, the accompanyist for one of my songs was REALLY bad, and the other one changed the harp accompanyment THAT MORNING, so I didn't know it. Yeah, should stop slagging people off to make myself feel better.)

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,475 ✭✭✭carpothepunk

I forgot about this thread, hehe.Pretty sure we got 25%,the examiner was really nice, and we were joking round with her and stuff saying "Well play one more for an extra 5%" and she said "I wish you could"

    So yeah,all in all,uber:D
