Ok say I am downloading a home made avi file which was sent to me in email rar'd into 10 parts of 15mb each. I only have 5 parts downloaded, is it possible to see some of the video without unrarring it fully(which would be impossible cos I dont have all the rars).
I see on some forums that people say, about movies "looks good from the few rars that i've seen"

IIRC the first part of an AVI should start to play.

So the problem is the extraction. With Zip files you need the last part as it contained the "summary" - not sure if that's true with .rar

    BTW http://www.7zip.org extracts .rar

I'm not so sure you can do. Even if you have the first few RARs. AFAIK unless you have all the completed files most unRARing apps will say the file is corrupt. Though that's just from my experience, and I'm using winRAR, so other programs might yield different results. I've never used 7zip for rar files, so can't comment on that.

Just by chance is there a non-rarred sample/preview file included?

No sample..just one avi file rarred.
Maybe I'll ask on the forum I see it on, but that means i have to register just for one question.. meh.

Winrar has an option to 'keep broken files' before exptracting, try ticking that box then playing the resultant file in vlc or media player classic.

Yeh check that box to keep broken files and ignore the warning that there's files missing. The resulting avi should be viewable no bother
