This is what I am like on LimeWire

I have T1 internet speeds but when I am downloading it only comes down @ 20-40kb/s, which is really bad. I think it might be the fact that the computer that you are downloading from has to upload and connection up is slower than down... so it takes over double the time

same with most programs, kazaa, bearshare, shereaza, limewire, its all the same.
i cant get mine to go stable.
e.g, i start downloading a song, and it takes 30 seconds.
i download another, and its 5 mins.
    varies from 1kb - 300kb.
either its my portforwarding on my router, or the upload / download connection between myself and the host.

Try port forwarding for any speed faults with software like mentioned above. Good site that will have you up and running in matter of minutes is http://portforward.com Just follow steps and your sorted hopefully.

your speed on p2p software depends on the connection of the person on the other end. eg i have a 3meg down connection and 384kb/s (48kB/s) up. so anyone uploading something from me will get no more than 48kB/s no matter how many ports they forward

and most people in ireland have less of an upload speed, most at 128

I almost forgot to mention, Why does Port forward affect the speed of your downloads. When you install a certain program, Its default ports are ay for eg.. 6724. Certain ISP's block certain Default ports on programs. That is why it is important to port forward also. Make sure you setup a static IP for your computer. As I said follow steps on http://portforward.com and see what the results are after. If still as slow as ever, There is something up.

You normally forward ports because you have an NAT firewall - which blocks incoming connections. p2p apps like Limewire, bearshare etc. are full of leechers, who cap their upload speed to a minimum. Your best bet is to find a private bittorrent tracker where you'll be able to get very good speeds, but with that you also have to keep a solid up/down ratio.
