Suggestions please - DLT/DAT on XP Home

So ... I've a small 'challenge' facing me ... please help

Half decent PC with on-board SCSI, running XP Home (stop laughing). SCSI controller is recent and driver claims to be loaded & working fine.

I've an external DLT, and an external DAT (DDS/2) drive... these are not badged, and I don't have specific drivers for them.

Now, there is no backup software on this machine ... not even the MS Backup applet that you get with XP Pro.

    Question :
Can anyone suggest a good freeware/shareware tape backup software that will run on XP Home ? Is there any way to get even MS Backup running ?

We think these tapes were generated on a Windows NT 4.0 system ... with NT Backup (which I think is Veritas based)

    ... any suggestions, or am I s.o.l ??

It's not my machine, so I'm slow upgrade the OS, or do anything unmannerly.

    ... and no ... the tapes don't contain porn:o

MS Backup is on the XP Home CD, it's just not installed by default.
It's in the Valueadd folder as described here.

If you're trying to recover from NT made tapes, you may need to find out what
service pack was applied to NT when the tapes were made.
I seem to recall that one of them changed the format used by MS Backup.
I think it was SP 3 or 4. Maybe I'm wrong, but I remember running into
a problem with a restore that was resolved by rolling back the service pack.

    Hope that helps,
    NiallB

if it's a one off and you will never need to restore again you could download veritas - just image the machine first so you can remove all traces later

http://www.backupexec.com/ - centre bottom link to Free Offers - not free just time limited trial version. Try Ntbackup first though veritas is picky.
