MSI Motherboard problem

    Hi Y'all

I have a MSI K8N SLI Platinum, nForce4 SLI, ATX Motherboard

The night before last I updated the BIOS using the MSI Live Update software

Now everything appeared to go swimingly and the machine restarted and no problems were evident (I had made a StartUp Disc just in case)

However today when I went to start my machine up the on button didn't work

It's the first time that I have attempted to switch the machine on since flashing the BIOS.

Nothing else has chamged - everything is switched on/plugged in.

    Any ideas ?

Did you try holding the power-on button for ~5 seconds?
Sometimes you can get a buggy shutdown that acts more like a suspend.
    Worth a try anyway.

Are you getting any signs of life at all? Spinning fans? motherboard LEDs? beeps? monitor signal?

Hey we've all been there.... :D

Was there a reason you flashed the bios on such a relatively new mobo ?

I always try and avoid flashing unless there is a big problem.

pull out the mains "kettle" lead, ATX and 12V lines for about 10sec and try to boot again.

DonkeyStyle \o/: I tried that - tried it for thirty seconds and no joy :-(

There are signs of life in so far as the main on/off switch is illuminated on but no other led's or noises

istep: Unfortunately no reason other than tinkering - which makes me feel rather idiotic now !!

SouperComputer: ATX and 12V lines ? Are they internal thingies ? I'll try the mains lead now in the mean time

Thanks guys for the ideas so far

    An update of sorts .....

What I have noticed is that if I disconnect the power (pull out the mains lead or switch the power off) and then reconnect, the motherboard led flashes for the briefest of moments when i hit the power switch and a sound is heard on the speakers.

this won't happen again until i switch off and back on again

Moved, 'cos it ain't a windows problem.

Some new motherboards have a recovery option in case of flash failing. Check the manual or web site.
Others don't. Some flash utilities will happily overwrite other manufactuers BIOS's (take a bow Toshiba  )

There is a chance it could be coincidence.

Disconnect the power cable overnight, perhaps remove the backup battery too (big watch battery) if no joy before then.

Listen to the PSU - does it make any chirping or hissing clicking noises (none are good - but a PSU is usually cheaper than a M/B)

I had a similar problem, new PSU sorted me. The ATX plug is a long rectangular plug going into your motherboard with 20/24 cables coming out of it going to the power supply. Just check all your power connections are ok and try Capt'n Midnight's suggestions. Maybe try a different PSU if you can borrow one or have one handy.

When it restarted was that a warm-restart? As in you didn't manually shut it down and use the power button to turn it on again? Could also be a problem with the new BIOS then and what it does with signals from the power button.

I have the exact same mobo, (great mobo btw).
Again, Im reluctant to flash, but when necessary, it does what it does. You may try going on their site and buying a flash off them in the post. No guarantees it will work, but it's an option.
I think Ill leave my mobo as it is now:p
    Cheers for the heads up;)

    I just remembered!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had the exact same problem with the exact same mobo, but I did'nt flash.
I have had to send my comp to Norway back to Komplett to fix under guarantee.
Im not saying it's a fault, but that's what happened to me. Coincidences arent always coincidences...

Same crap here on the same board, ended up getting a PSU replacemnet. Well actually what happened mine was i had to leave the board plugged out for 10 minutes+ and then it would power up. I had to flash for the X2 processor to be recognised.

PSU replacement will probably fix it.
Same Mobo, same(ish) issue, see recent thread.
What CPU are you using? A post on the MSI forum described a BIOS problem after flashing a board with an Athlon 64, I've lsot the link now but a search could find it for you.

Found this, but I'd go with a replacement PSU first -

I have an AMD Athlon 64

I really don't know why i bothered doing this - i have bruises on me arse from kicking meself

I've tried removing the power to no avail
I've tried removing the CMOS battery to no avail
Prayer and wishful thinking - ditto

It's just that I am getting absolutley no response from the PC when i switch it on - nothing - nada

Makes it rather difficult to diagnose the problem

When it's no response at all the chances are it's the PSU, though the flashing compicates things.

could you get a loan of a psu?
try it. i got the same board, but never had that exact problem.

isnt it possible to un-flash teh bios to an older version?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 theaulddubliner

It won't be possible to get a loan of a psu

my understanding [limited] is that i need some sort of interface to use the boot disk to reset the bios - i had a look at loads of posts on the MSI forums and they keep referring to a feature that appears to be singulalrly missing from my board

Komplett are sending me out a new BIOS chip which the guy reckons should fix it but I have to admit I am in the dark with all this

Thank you everyone so far for your suggestions and help - when things go wrong it's a pain in the arse but it's great to see people helping each other out

If you can locate the battery on the motherboard and remove it and replace it immediately this shoukd return the board to its last working BIOS settings. This should work. It has for me in the past. If it does work I suspect you should leave well enough alone!! Good Luck..

Yeah I've tried that Pappacharlie but unfortunately no joy

    thanks for your suggestion
