Please note that there is a Windows forum.

    Home or Pro? Service Pack?

Does it shut down OK in Safe Mode?
When it hangs - what's no the screen (Still the desktop? Blank desktop? "Safe to shutdown" message.. or does it pop up with an "End Task" prompt?)
Ctrl+Alt+Del -> Are there (m)any processes Not Responding?

I used to have a similar problem myself on my system prior to my current one, in my case it was a hardware issue (**** motherboard drivers; i.e. first release drivers - when I updated them to the latest everything was fine)...

Careful now, if you update your mobo drivers and something ****s up, the only way you'll get it working again is to clear memory on the BIOS chip.. do so at your own risk!
