Hi, I need to use video tutorials that are avi's but Media Player won't play the video from them. DivX won't either. Is there a codec I can get or a different media player that I can use instead?

files saved as .avi are rarelt avi files.

they could be any form of encoding.

    try the core media player:
    http://corecoded.com/

if it can't play them it will give you an error message in the console which will contain which codec you need. you can then google that and install it.

I know your sorted but the easiest way to get something your not sure of to play back is to install ffdshow and it should play in WMP.

ffdshow supports quite a number of video codecs so it should be able to handle the file unless its a real odd ball of a thing just go with the default settings during the install.

VLC will play Most things, google for "G Spot" it's an app that will tell you the codecs used to encode a video file.

Can anyone see anything wrong with this statement?!

For gods sake don't do that in work!

The first few will be the application you're looking for. Actually all the ones on the first page will be.

VLC is nice and all but I find it very flakey and the directshow players to be a better choice like Media Player Classic and even WMP when you cut away some of the bloat of its interface.

VLC Flakey, How? WMP sucks. I only use Media Player classic for Real Player stuff, really really hate it's interface. Also VLC is good to use if you have two monitors.

VLC is a good player but I have come across weird overlay issues and problems with the program not saving settings and a browse of there forums I found folks with similar issues.

WMP (bar the interface with a bit of tweaking) isn't all that bad with directshow all you need is a DS codec installed and you can play anything hell I can even play Apples H.264 trailers in WMP and with far better performance as well that's the neat thing about directshow.

Click view-menu bar options-hide taskbar that will get rid of the tabs on top then resize the player to as small as it can go then close WMP so it saves its position so whenever you open WMP it will auto resize itself to the size of the source clip.

But MPC is better in terms of tweaks you can apply for a directshow player even if the main interface is spartan though I don't think VLC's is any better.
