Just wondering if anyone might have some info regarding this.

Last year, it was apparently a tester to see if it could become a reliable venue to hold gigs, in a Slane style manor. REM, Meatloaf, and Status Quo all played which shows that it can attract top names (even if their not at the top of their game regardless of your preference of music), but it was still fairly impressive considering it had never held anything of the like before.

So was just curious, if anyone knows if its going ahead this year? Who might be playing?

    Cheers

Ps. I don't want this turning into an Oxygen type thread on who they want to play. Reliable info only.

That was rumoured on here last year, fairly unlikely!

Class venue I thought, easy to get to, and great views during the day before the gig started, and then because it slopes downhill to the stage, a great view of the band is to be had during the gig.

Apparently there's 4 gigs there this year, but I haven't heard any info on who's playing yet, would have thought they'd be announcing them soon though......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 458 ✭✭d-arke

MCD applied for planning permission for 4 gigs and got the go ahead. I've just been told this morning that the Stereophonics had been announced on the news.

I've just been told David Gray now, anyone hear anything about this?!?

Yeah he's 'penciled in' for the weekend of the 16th/17th/18th June.

    So say the Fingal Indo.

d arke as I was your source for the David Gray thing, I stand by the Fingal Indo, they're pretty reliable for stuff like that...wouldn't be mad on him myself

Concerts scheduled for the weekend of 17th/18th June have been cancelled coz of problem with MCD's license application. Most likely that they will go for a double-header in late August or September.

As for last year being a "tester" - Fingal County Council (owners of Ardgillan) signed a 5-year contract with MCD with a provision for up to 4 concerts to be held per year. This in effect turns out to be 8 concerts if they are run over 2-day weekends.

One of the driving forces here is that Lord Mountcharles (owner of Slane) is apparently asking for a wee bit more cash these days for hiring out Slane. MCD are potentially sending him a message to the effect of "Who needs Slane when we got a cracking venue like Ardgillan? Closer to Dublin, better transport links, cheaper than your gaff."

"woohooo" is all i'm saying. keep us posted, well, keep me posted, cause i have to fly back for the gig

    Will do D-arke.
I literally live next door to the castle & attend the pre-concert meetings with FCC & MCD so I get to hear what's going on before most others do. Will post details as I get them.

If Pink Floyd play there, I'll eat my jocks (although I'll still be there) main reason for this is that Gilmour has said Live 8 was a one-off to put past disagreements in the past and move on. There will be no more Pink Floyd gigs anywhere (unfortunately).

The main rumours I've heard so far have been David Gray and Stereophonics, not my first choices, but as I can walk to the venue from my gaff, I'd probably go anyway.

Now, if they could persuade AC/DC to show up....

Please spare me the ageing rockers!

The grief I had with 50-year-old oul wans wanting to pee in my garden/driveway on the morning, noon & night of the Meatloaf/Quo gig was crazy!

The younger REM/Moby fans on the Sunday were in posession of far better bladders & much better behaved.

Now, if they could persuade Britney to show up...

she'd definitely pee in your garden.....:)

What do you reckon I'd get for a bucket of Britney's pee on Ebay?

Maybe I could put together a "Box" set:
Bottle of BS pee (Eau d'Ardgillan)
Signed photos of BS on the job
DVD of peeing footage (including exclusive post-pee interview with BS & a history of al-fresco micturation by Kevin)

Maybe I should start a new thread - Which pop star would you like to pee in your garden?

I was at both gigs last year and didn't pee in anyone's garden (or chips). :D

As a matter of interest - what was your opinion of access to Ardgillan?
Which way did you come in? Coast Road from Balbriggan? Balrothery? Lusk/Skerries Road? Any problems getting in or out either day?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,451 ✭✭✭blastman

Coast road as I live on the Balbriggan end of it. No problem getting in or out on either day.

FCC have confirmed there'll be no concerts in Ardgillan this year, they are going to 'concentrate' on having a family fun day instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,817 ✭✭✭✭The Hill Billy

They have the Family Fun Day every year though...???

They ran out of time for arranging concerts this year on 9th June as the license application must be submitted 16 weeks before the concert date & they can only have concerts between the beginning of May & the end of September.

I have to say "Well done!" to FCC on the new playgound. They said last year that they'd spend the cash from the concerts on building a playground & it is absolutely cracking!

Coupled with the fact that the east coast for Ireland has become flooded with average concerts. Too many concerts, too low grade. I'd rather there not be a concert up there than have David Gray/Coldplay/<insert middle of the road crap> play up there.

Yeah fair play to the play ground, it was only around 7 years in the coming.

Was there in 2005 for the Quo / Meatloaf concerts. Enjoyed it as well !
