Going to UK or other foreign dentist

    Hi Folks,

This seems to be a common question, but strangely not on this forum as far as I can tell. I am wondering if it is really worth my while to look at getting some dental work done outside of Ireland. While I am very happy with my current dentist, the prices for routine work seems quite expensive, and for bigger pieces of work - very expensive.

I had a root canal treatment last July, which has since cracked and I now need a crown on that tooth. I was quoted around €1,000 for this. I was also advised that in the next year or two, I will need 6 veneers on my front teeth re-done, and that will be €600 per tooth; €3,600 in total. Although I should get about half of that full amount back in tax relief, that is still a fair whack of money.

I have heard lots of stories of people going to N.I. to get this type of work done, and paying a much smaller amount then you would pay in the republic, but I have some reservations - firstly that after treatment care is obviously going to be a pain if I have to travel back up, and secondly that I lived in the UK as a child, and I have to say that the work I had done over there (like caps on teeth) never seemed to last as long as the same work over here.

Sorry for the rambling on, but any thoughts?

    thanks,

    Eoin

I have gone up to Belfast for treatment, i live in Dublin. WHat they were charging me down here for 600euro, they charged me the equivalent of 100euro. Funnily enough a family member is gone up to Newry today - i went to Belfast cause it was the only place that would do the type of work i wanted - and for a crown they are charging approx 1000 down here, up there is £200stg. Same with root canal, its a fraction of the cost. My friend went up to Belfast to the same dentist for train tracks. The place i went to in Belfast will collect u and drop u back to the train station free of charge if u wish, however i was happy to drive.I still go down here just for my basic fillings if i need any, but anything other than that i, and all my family, go up north. ALso, they are happy to fill out the MED2(think thats what its called) so u can claim ur money back.I would imagine the prices in the UK are the same as N.I. so i think it would be pointless going over there, however, if ur willing to travel further afield id say it would be cheaper again i.e Poland etc. PM me if u want any further info or telephone numbers for dentists up there.

N.I. really sounds like it will be worth my while - I am looking at around 4600 for dental work over the next two years, of which I should get €2300 back on through tax (veneers are considered cosmetic, so the PRSI doesn't cover any of it). I think the same goes for crowns, even though it is because the root canal filling cracked.

I know it would be even cheaper in Eastern Europe, but I would prefer to have the piece of mind of being able to travel to Belfast if there are problems.

Has anyone ever asked their dentist about the price differences? If I get some quotes from up North, I would be interested to see what my Irish dentist would say to try and convince me that I am better off getting it done with him. I am guessing that they will say the quality is beter over here, and I have to say that having lived in the UK and Ireland, the dental work over here does seem to last longer...
