How many English teams do you think will progress in the CL?

Personally don't think any. Arsenal have the best chance but Madrid only have to score once to turn the game on its head. Not sure if Liverpool can score twice as Benfica do not have to attack - wouldn't be surprised to see penos in this. Chelsea are up against it after last night but with an early goal could have a chance. They need to go at Barca from the start.

I reckon zero. Liverpool arent great at breaking down resolute defences, Barca will finish off Chelsea with an early goal, and I suspect Real will beat Arsenal 1-2.

I think that liverpool will overturn their 1-0 defecit against Benfica.

Arsenal, IMO, will not be able to hold out against Real Madrid - even if the match is at home.

John Terry's own goal for Barca has probably already decicded this tie.

You should rearrange the poll if possible to make more sense.

    1. None
    2. Arsenal
    3. Chelsea
    4. Liverpool
    5. Arsenal + Chelsea
    6. Arsenal + Liverpool
    7. Chelsea + Liverpool
    8. All Three

Personally, I think Arsenal and Liverpool will make it with Chelsea being eliminated.

I think Arsenal will scrape through. I can see Liverpool conceding an away goal to put them out of the tie and Chelsea to make a valiant effort but not quite doing it.

I've voted two, but honestly have'nt clue which two! :)

Real can easily turn over a one goal deficit so Arsenal while best placed now can't assume anything. Liverpool can clearly get a win at Anfield but Rafa will need to start with a better formation and foward selection. Chelseas job is harder but its certainly not impossible.

    Mike.

think if rafa plays his best back 4 (carra hypia, finnan, riise), Alonso and Gerrard in midfield with kewell on the left and crouch and fowler up front, i'd fancy liverpool making it through. Even if hamman started central and gerrard on the right, it should still be enough going forward but i much prefer gerrards attacking influence bursting through the center. I think Arsenal will make it, if Madrid play anything like as shockingly as they did. Dont think Chelsea will make it, but then again, wouldn't be surprised to see a very hard strong team stopping barca play at every oppertunity.

I think Arsenal will go through. Based on last nights performance, even when they had 11 players, Chelsea just dont have the game to beat Barcelona and their defensive tactics will be shown up. Liverpool dont have the attacking ability to score two against Benfic and if they go all out attack I think Benfica will score.

Arsenal are the only ones I think will go through.

    Only Arsenal IMO.

At least, that's my optimistic side still burning strong after Tuesday (ahhhh... What a night... Mmmm) come and ask me in about 12 days and I'll probably insist that we'll get stuffed at the Library.

But Pool and Chelsea won't go through.

Yes but Real only have to then score another away goal and Arsenal will have to score a further 2 home goals..

I'd say one of Arsenal or Liverpool will get through.

I can't see Chelsea overcoming a 2 away goal deficit at the Nou Camp, and I think one goal from them should see the tie go a big scoring game, simply because once Chelsea attack at the Nou Camp, the game will open up, and Ronaldinho and Messi will destory them, or at least I hope.

    Arsenal vs. Madrid:
I think this no way relates to how Arseanl play, I think it totally relates to which Madrid team shows up. If we have the same team as the last match, then Arsenal could go through, if we have the Madrid team which has been playing in La Liga for the last while, Arsenal dont have a hope.

    Liverpool vs. Benfica:
I'm not as sure about this one, I think Liverpool have always had a difficulty at breaking teams down, and when they need to score a goal, they normally have trouble doing this. They can't just score an early goal and sit back, because They need the security against an away goal, and its a very risky game to sit on a one goal lead with an away goal in the mix, very very risky.
tbh, I can't see Benfica not scoring, so it all depends on whether Liverpool can score 3. I don't think they can, but that, said, Gerrard.

Arsenal and Chelsea to go through. Do people not remember last years encounter in the Champions League? Chelsea lose the first leg 2-1, after Drogba was sent off for an innocuous challenge. Next leg, Chelsea put 4 past them. There's no reason why the same can't happen again for the next leg.

Yeah but last year Chelski lost 2-1 away and not at home!

I think that Liverpool will go through! I think that Chelski will go out! I am not sure about Arsenal, they played very well against Madrid on Tuesday but Madrid are still very dangerous and could quite easily get 2 away goals in Highbury!

I had a little prediction bet with a couple of friends when the fixtures were announced that Arsenal and Liverpool would progress with Barca getting their revenge on Chelsea.....and I think I'll keep it that way after seeing the first legs.

logic sujests that arsenal and liverpool have the best chance of progression,

Chelsea need to score twice in the nou camp, which is a tough place to go for a result, but if anyone could its them

Liverpool have a home game and although are down a goal, they should be able to overturn it, not saying the will, just they have the players to do that

Arsenal are at home and if played properly should be able to hold a real team that the gunners should have slipped 3 past

Not picking on you specifically blu_sonic, it's just a turn of phrase you used there has been commonly stated by others on this thread...

Look, as you said (fair play) Arsenal should've scored at least 3 in the Bernabeu. Granted, senderos' error should've given Beckham and Madrid a goal too, but then that proves my point... Arsenal won't try to hold Madrid. It's not our game. This isn't Graham's arsenal, it's Wenger's, and while 4-5-1 is a formation we hav used a lot away from home, at THOF it's been 4-4-2 all the way.

The question is not whether Real will score. They will. 180 minutes without scoring? Nah.

Thing is, Arsenal will have more chances at home than they did in the Bernabeu, and we'll have more than 1 out-and-out striker.

We WILL score again in this tie.

One thing thats certain is that the stage is set for some great open matches in 2 weeks. Liverpool need to go all out to get goals, 3 to allow for Benfica scoring away. Chelsea obviously can only get through if they score at least 2 goals and Barca are hardly a team to sit back and soak up the pressure, they'll be aiming to put the tie beyond chelsea with a few of their own. Madrid Arsenal could prove to be one team attacking, the other defending if it weren't these two teams involved, but seeing as it is i expect at least 1 goal per team, and with the calibre of some of the players on show, probably more.

Roll on 2 weeks time! Come on the 'pool!

i'd say 2 of the three will go through.

Although watch for the papers claiming the premier league is tosh if all 3 go out (despite liverpool winning it the season before, and having 2 teams in the semi's).

Actually, having properly allowed the euphoria and dizzying delerium of Tuesday night (I was there you know!!!) to subside, I have reviewed the situation rationally...

And nah, I don't see any of the English sides going thru. Soz.

Benfica will get the 0-0 bore draw they need, Real will probably get a jammy 2-1 reverse (ala Chelsea 03/04) and Barca will blow Chelsea away. Or scrape it. Whatever.

English football... The most overrated in the world...

    Note: I am English.

I think you have done your calculations wrong, grossly. It's the other way around. Sure Chelsea are 5/1 to progress themselves.

I think all three could still definitely go through.

Liverpool only need a goal to level the tie. Benfica will have a tough time scoring at Anfield too, as 19 of the the 22 teams to visit there this year have. They didn't really show anything from the home leg to suggest that they have the firepower to do that. It'll still be a tough game for Liverpool, but with the match already sold out I think it will be one of those Anfield nights that we have become accustomed to this last year or so.

Arsenal should qualify, and I hope they do. They definitely have the ability to score again. I think it could be closer than people think though if Madrid come out and attack. I'm going for a 2-2.

And onto Chelsea. I see this being a high scoring game, and I can see Chelsea scraping it 2-3. Can't wait for this game to be honest. Should be a highly charged night, and a game that given the rivalry will not disappoint.

It can hardly be seeing as there are so many like yourself who obviously don't rate it.

Yet I find it hard to understand how it is so woeful when in Europe over the last two years they have had as many representatives in the knock-out stages of the CL as any other nation. I'm not saying it is definitely the best league in the world, but it is definitely one of the best in the world.

I'm delighted with the CL so far. I support Liverpool and Arsenal to a lesser extent. Liverpool were robbed but they will recover..Arsenal were brilliant-if only they could unleash thier potential ever week.

All three are on a knife edge. Arsenal have it in their hands, but alot will be down to how Wenger sets them out, and how much belief they have after the previous match.

Benfica - Liverpool could be a classic, a la Liverpool - Olympiacos last year. We've got to go out and play, and it's absolutely possible to progress here. No matter what, it's going to be an edgy night though. Is Luis Garcia back? Always good for a goal!

Chelsea - Barca? I'd go with Barca, it's a huge ask of any team to go to the Nou Camp and overturn Barca, especially with Barca, and the fans, so up for it.

Barcelona will beat Chelsea in the Nou camp and I think they will do it well. The reason being that Chelsea will be unable to play there usual boring style of football of defending and nicking a goal. They do this so well and then punish teams that then must go at them. This time will be different though as they have to go at Barcelona. Fact of the matter is that Barcelona are by far a better footballing side than Chelsea, by far. They will play their style and punish a Chelsea side that need to push forward. As for people mentioning Chelseas 4-2 win last seaosn, please remember that they got very lucky with deflected goals and a dodgy goal. I cant see them getting such a huge amount of luck again this time.

Arsenal should and will go through. Madrid are an ageing side and are no where near as good as they used to be. Saying that though I feel they will score because Senderos is always good for a mistake or a lapse of concentration. I think Arsenal will score as well though and will at least get a draw.

Benfica Liverpool is an interesting game. As I have pointed out before I think Benfica are a very good side, a side that people keep saying are not very good. That is rubbish. They have no proven it twice against English opposition by winning matches. The problem is they are not a very good travelling side and can sometimes truggle defensively. But we all know Liverpools strikers are average at best. So for me this match will rely on how ell Liverpools midfield play and if they can fashion enough chances to score. If they dont score in the first half and I can see Benfica going through because Liverpool will be forced to put more and more players forward allowing Benficas excellent wingers to catch them on the break.

Im sticking with just one team to go through, Arsenal.
