if i want to buy a computer off dell...

can i ring them and just get a computer..

    with
    no sound / speaker.
    no ram
    no hard drive
    no dvd burner
    no keyboard and no mouse
    and no graphics card.

    basically i want

    a tower
    a mainboard
    a processor
    a monitor

will they sell that to me? or do dell not do custom order's?

    thanks if anyone knows!

I don't think they will to be honest.

You could buy whatever the cheapest POS they sell at the moment is and gut that ?

thing is, i want a barebones machine.

and then i will get the other parts seperate.
just they charge an unreal amount of money for

    ram,
    hard drives,
    graphics cards,
    mice,
    keyboards,
    dvd burner

    etc.

i just dont want to buy those parts off them cos they cost too much.

ill ring them in the morning and see what the cs says.

If it doesn't have to be Dell then you can buy barebones systems from places like Dabs the Asus T2-PH1 (specs on Asus site) comes with the case + mobo just minus the monitor and CPU which you could just buy there and then as well, they have a few more barebones systems worth checking out as well.

if you're going to that much hassle or getting other parts for the computer, you might aswell just add three more items on to your list and buy online tbh.

unless it has to look like a dell machine for the ultra stubborn people out there.

nope..no chance of it..you could get the board and the process plus the monitor but you'll pay outrageous prices and you still be short the chassis as you can't order this.

ah rats. i rang them today and they said, they dont sell computer's that are not complete. apparently they refuse to sell individual parts.

ah well. guess ill have to sort something else out.

Im puzzled if you want to build your own machine why not do it properly?

Dell are for selling beige boxes to the lowest common demoninator imo. A dell motherboard certainly isnt a great choice for the start of a build your own system. If you want to build a machine do it properly. Try the BYO section on komplett.

I also think you have got a bee in your bonnet about dell that aint necessarily true. They tend to charge lots for extras such as more ram or bigger disks, but their base specs are pretty good value for money imo.

Komplett's probably best for this. You *can* buy pretty much any individual part from Dell, but it's gonna be expensive and just a lot of hassle.

I think all the Dell mbs have sound and graphics built in. So no would be the answer.

Not all, but quite a few. Nothing wrong with adding seperate gfx and sound though...

Still, better to buy from Komplett.

Dell aren't quite THAT bad :D

Sure the dirt cheap ones have onboard but

    1) all the dells that creep into mid range prices have decent gfx

    and

    2) even with onboard gfx its a bonus - you can use the agp slot for upgrading, and if you feck something up short term, you can revert to the onboard to tide you over.

If you go Dell you get a copy of Windows in the price.
If buying from Dell just buy the bundle [Hint] and try and sell off the bits you don't need - if they give you discount for removing stuff it's nowhere near the price of the stuff removed. Have a look around at the prices stuff has sold on these threads for a guideline.

Dell do not do custom orders. They do bundles with easy to add stuff. Look at the small business section too, many of the bundles there don't come with speakers or scanner or all that junk.

Yes they charge mad money for easy to change stuff, with laptops it's can be cheaper to buy a 60/80GB drive later yourself upgrade from the one in the bundle (and you get to keep the original Dell drive as a spare)

You just have to look for the best bundle with the least stuff in it.
    Or DIY.

DIY all the way if you're comfortable.

Metaphorical beige boxes if they are given that the other thing you can't buy from Dell these days is a PC with a beige case.

They do them in the US - beige "white box" systems :D

    Noooo nooooo Nooooo !
    From Havoks post above !!

It does not work this way with Dell , I got caught out badly a few years ago , thought I could save money by buying a system with onboard graphics and then buy a decent card cheaper than Dell would do it.

When I cracked open the case guess what ? NO AGP SLOT , I kid you not ,
With Dell , you get exactly what you pay for , no more , their ad was totally accurate , with a dell , you will not get more than you need ( ask for ! ) ,
Ysee Dell are so big they can lever what's called Economies of scale , in other words their motherboards are specially made for Dell by a sub contractor , not a third party maker like say MSI or ASUS , and onboard cheap systems are exactly that , no expansion slots and no chance of change , so even if Dell would sell you a barebones system , chances are that it would be no good to you as third party parts wouldn't fit !! ( no sockets or slots ! )

best place to get that would be www.komplett.ie

You can ask for a system with an AGP slot - it's all on the specs. Dell are moving to more standard mobos now anyway.

Well then yo obviously tried to buy a dirt cheap one - what do you expect?

All the decent dell spec'd PC's DO have AGP slots. Saying that all the motherboards are specifically made for a market is true but as I said, unless you by the cheapest of the cheap, the decent DELL's have agp slot. (or pci-e more recently)

    Just remembered
If you don't need windows the have a look at the cheapo servers, they come with no sound, OS , monitor, keyboard etc. Sometimes can be resonably priced, just make sure you don't choose 5 year GOLD warranty ;)
